Hard Foam for sanding.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a bit of hard foam like the stuff you get inside epoxy surfboards. It needs to be 1000mm long x 100mm x 60mm, epoxy proof and able to be shaped.
All answers on a postcard please.

Roofing insulation board. There are many suppliers, but this company http://www.builditsecurepayment.co.uk/acatalog/Celotex_Tuffr_tuff-r_insulation_boards_products.html seems to have a good range of thicknesses at reasonable price. Not knowing where you are this may not be ideal, but Google will sort it for you.

Do you mean the sort of structural foam used in yacht construction (cored-hulls etc.)?

I can ask a few people I know where they get theirs. In the meantime you could try googling for the sort of firms that supply fibre-glass, epoxy etc.

It depends what you want it for, Kingspan or celotex are polyurethane foams used for insulation. They are unaffected by polyester or epoxy resins & make great cores for frames. The stuff is easy to shape & can be made into complex shapes. I wouldnt use it for a hull laminate but it has its uses.

This a Good News Bad News sort of post.

Good News It is easy to find from Sheffield Insulation You want closed cell urethane foam. Usually comes in Blue but can be pink or green.

Bad News The usual minimun order is 10 sheets 8' x 4'

Good News Lots of modellers use it so ask your local model aircraft shop for a steer to someone who cuts their own foam models.

Bad News Proper modellers are getting harder to find but ask around.

Bad News 100 mm thick is difficult

Good News 50mm thick is much easier to find, just laminate it with a scrape of epoxy.

Bad News It is reputed to be really nasty stuff and some people have respiratory problems from breathing the dust so where a really good mask.

Good News Lots of old diy surfers and modellers around.

If you get really stuck try Mainly Models in Hitchin. Ask him about his Big Lanc it is blue foam.
