Does anyone have a list of the potential overnight stopping locations between Chichester bar and Dover marina? An idea of facilities, distances and overall impression of the locations would be a real help.

Look forward to plenty of criticism!

Well the two obvious ones are Eastbourne and Brighton...

Both a little soulless IMHO, but neither bad for a quick stop on-route...

I prefer Eastbourne from a marina perspective, and Brighton from a town and facilities perspective...

Chichester - Brighton is i'd guess about 40nm
Brighton - Eastbourne about 20nm
Eastbourne to Dover about 45nm

Rye Harbour is quaint and fairly well equipped if you don't mind a drying moring but only accessible for 90 minutes either side of HW. The Sovereign at Eastbourne is a typical corporate marina with good facilities within spitting dstance of your mooring. There's also a retail park with a large Asda nearby but it's quite a long way from anything else. It's big advantage is that it's accessible all tide via a lock. Folkestone is not worth bothering with as a planned stop - you might as well push on to Dover.

I've no real knowledge of Brighton, Newhaven or Shoreham.

i would avoid rye - there have been instances of the local youths throwing stones at moored yachts - no escape when you are dried out!!!

Littlehampton. Tidal, but a good stopover and some newish pontoons in deep water with walk ashore access, electricity and water and close to town. And a very helpful harbourmaster.

Are you cruising or in passage 'mode' as you may get in and then have foul tide when you get out - depends on your priorities, seeing places or miles!

West to East you have (I think!)
Littlehampton / Shoreham / Brighton Marina / Newhaven / Eastbourne / Rye / Folkestone / Dover. You can of course anchor in the lee of Dungeness too for a tide stop.

In 2005 I sailed solo from Brightlingsea to Dover to Brighton to Chi Harbour and then on return Gosport to Eastbourne to Ramsgate and back to B'sea in my 27' sloop each trip in 3 longish days.

Used to sail dinghies out of Shoreham Harbour - the 'Marina' is inside the locked harbour - so not very pretty. Brighton to me is just a very expensive boat park but some may like the town - I lived there until I was 18 so don't see its attraction! Eastbourne you have to lock in and there are some shallow patches on the approach. I don't recall much to do there but then I was probably nackered!

Heard good things about Newhaven but not been.

I was in Newhaven twenty years ago, it was already nice then with friendly people and good accomodation.
I suggest it can only be improved now, like all the other marinas.

If in "passage mode" we anchored behind Folkstones old Ferry breakwater - and had quite a comfortable night. I have written about if on hear before a seach should find the post but if not and interested PM me for more info.

If you can take the ground the visitors pontoon at Sussex Yacht Club (Western arm of the harbour aka River Adur) is worth considering. Friendly club, good ablutions, not expensive and a good place to arrive with the east going tide; water available about + or - 2 hours HW but depends on draught of course. Quite good restaurants in Shoreham. You would need to arrive during working hours to arrange keys to club etc., or (possibly) telephone ahead.
