Harbourmaster George is on the telly

Brilliant - glad to see he's still thriving. Lent us a mooring when we were in the river earlier in the summer...

Stupidly, I fell out of my dinghy whilst alongside Brio, paying George my fiver. I was floating down the Deben underneath my upturned dinghy. George quickly (he must have been in his mid eighties then) jumped in his dinghy caught me and towed me to the hard. Amazing, I owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

Yes ood to see a Fella of that age eing so active plus productive , especially aiding some in the Boating Fraternity

But may I ask is his actual authority as a Harbour Master , I have wondered over many many years now ?

When visiting clients in that part of Suffolk , it has been commented on , that he has Physically stopped locals from using that Forshore area lauunching their Dinghys and Boats , sending them off with a warning that he would call the Police if they tried again

So oft puzzled as to why he did that or can do that ?

Anybody care to please comment ?

Thanks CP

Wonderful

“ when you do the work , what a lovely place to come every day” ?

Reminds me, in similar vein:
When I was a kid Charlie Attrill was the h/master at Yarmouth IOW.
He almost seemed to ‘live’ in a varnished clinker rowing boat hovering at the entrance.
Assisting and directing boats to attempt to moor up on the pile moorings , then there were all those non functioning or asthmatic petrol yacht engines, wafis at the helm ( moi) , paddle wheel Lymington ferries coming and going and fleets of West Wight Scows determinedly sailing in and out for a race, all crowding the tidal entrance and root of the pier..

Always a cheery word and a wave and a spare berth and timely rope to hand for visitors .
All so sanitised now
