What are they like? Will it fall apart going out of Chichester Harbour or in a F12 on the Grand Banks?
I really liked the 461 at LBS but worry a little over the build quality as I managed to break (no, really I did) a cupboard door by opening it and closing it!

Well I've just bought one (a 371, my boat was at LIBS on the inside stand) and I've been very, very impressed with what I've seen. The build quality looks excellent, the 371 has a higher displacement than many of the obvious competitors, pointing towards a stronger hull layup. Bulkheads are all fully glassed in, as is the central structural grid, rather than glued as in many boats. and apparently theres a bloody great steel plate in the hull which the keel attaches to, which means the hull shouldn't get damaged from running aground. I have an article about the construction of the 371 from a US magazine which is positively glowing about the quality of the layup.
All of the wiring and plumbing etc seems very profesionaly installed with spare wires so stuff can be added later without ripping half the boat apart.

Cupboard doors shouldn't fall off, but many things suffer from 'early life failures' of on sort or another, and you'll probably find the doors are held on with 'ACME standard no 1 hinges' just like every other boat at the show.
The 461 has an inovative new hull - epoxy moulded i believe so you get alot more strength for less weight - which should make it a flyer. They all have a reputation for sailing well and fast.
Have a chat whith Hanse UK in hamble - I have got nothing but praise for the level of customer service I have recieved, which is more than I can say about a few other dealears of some other makes when I was looking around.
Am I happy with my choice of Hanse - you betcha, would I choose the same again, yes, would I recommend them to anyone else, absolutely.

Not sure about coming out of Chichester in a Force 12 though! sounds like suicide to me /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

EDIT - oh yeah - and the price you see is the price you pay - i've added some electronics and a kiwiprop to the price shown at the show - thats it.

A Sailing School near the Solent (not actually based there), bought a Hanse which was delivered last season. They are very unhappy with customer service & their new boat is a Bavaria. Ask them.

I agree with your comments. If we hadn't bought a used boat, we would have chosen a Hanse. The 371 has crossed the pond from E to W in a very short time, sailed by the Irish sales manager who owns one. I am sure you will really enjoy it. What is the name you have chosen? Oh, and congratulations.

I looked at the largish Hanses at Southampton. There undoubtedly was a lot of boat for the money but:

1) The Cockpit was too wideand shallow and would have felt insecure when heeled
2) Much of the interior was space i.e. not utilised and would have been difficult to move about safely in rough weather.
3) I had my doubts about the interior finish quality.

All IMHO of course.

My Bavaria Match 35 has voyaged about 30m (that's 30 meters) in salt water. I think it is perfect that is why I named it so, perhaps we should form a club?

Hi Moose - do you want to tell me which locker door you claim to have broken off the LBS Hanse 461 so I can fix it?

It is my yacht.

Having just had it arrive in UK I have not sailed it myself in any blow or for any period - but last year we travelled across Biscay in close company with a Hanse 371 and it was not only fast - but took the F8/9 gale encountered in its stride and with no build issues.

'Build quality' is a subjective affair - we all know that.

If you own a Swan or and Oyster - all others will be lablelled as inferior. But for me balancing price and build quality - the Hanse 461 not only outsails say a Moody 49 - but actually costs less - and looks much better.

I had a Grand Soleil 42 prior and found that to be of a high quality build - but after crawling all over the 461 - believe that is better.

Guess time will tell - but do remember to let me know what locker you broke and if it is already fixed - guess that gives testimony to Hanse after sales service....................
