Hanse rudder mystery

Why the damage to the hull? Has the rudder been forced from astern? Does the rudder rub against the hull now?

It's f*cked. get a new one and carefully inspect the rudder tube, bearings, quadrant it's likely there will be further damage somewhere else.

The slight scrape to the hull at the top of the rudder suggests the rudder was pushed forwards.
Due to the split at the top end the repair will require the whole rudder to be opened up.
The foam core will be soaked.
Has the rudder stock been bent at all? I wouldn't be surpised. Disconnect the rudder stops and cables and rotate 360 degrees or as much as possible.
If the stock is bent you may find the rudder rotates freely at one point but is stiff when rotated either side.
Any damage inside the hull?
If I was estimating the cost I would say £2k to repair. £3k to replace but I really have no idea.

Having recently had a Hanse rudder repaired in order to fit a new stock, which involved the replacement of everything but the outer GRP and was a job of similar scale to this, I'd say those figures are a pretty good guess.

Hanse often used rudders from Jeffa. Don't know if this is one, but an appropriately sized Jeffa would be a guide for the price of a complete replacement.

When we contacted Hanse about an off the shelf replacement they sent a drawing of the wrong rudder and quoted a price far in excess of a repair. This is a newer boat though, so an enquiry might be more successful.

Oyster still have the mouldings for mine 34 yrs after building her, we had a new set of rudder mouldings on purchase of our boat 16 yrs ago & a very reasonable price.
i removed the rudder c/w stock, split the grp from the stock & sent the stock back to the moulders. it was rtnd pdq & i re installed the rudder. No foam core

I am in no way an expert, but to me the breakage, the split, and the hull marks look consistent with the rudder backing into something, turned slightly to one side.

Unless you saw the boat launched how do you know it wasn't already like that before you set sail? Could have been done when the boat was launched or manouevered in the marina ready for you to pick up. Looks like it was forced forward while turning to starboard in reverse to put that gouge in the hull.
