I'm going to look at a couple of previously own Hanse 315 if anyone has any tips on what I should be looking out for before I spend money on a survey would be very welcome.

Many thanks

We have a Hanse 370, and a good place I have always found to get advice is on the myhanse website. There is a fairly active forum of Hanse owners, you just need to click the relevant link to the specific 311, 312 and 315 owners forum.

I have had a 312 for 12 years from new. Absolutely no problems so far apart from loosing the rudder after a light grounding in Inverness. They seem to have a variety of rudders - some really bad. It may be worth budgetting for a new Jefa blade & stock plus new bearings .
Unless you get shallow draft you should find that the blade is approx 1680 long If not it may be one of the early dodgy ones like mine was
get the surveyor to check for water in the blade etc

Second the comments about the rudder. Pitting of the aluminium stock in and around the bearing areas is an occasional issue with older Hanses. You will probably not be able to examine the suspect area so if the steering is stiff I would assume this problem as worst case and either factor stock replacement into any offer (either a new rudder off the shelf or a rebuild which are the only two options). When I bought my Hanse 301 I had to immediately remediate this problem at a total cost of 2.5k which exceeded the 800 quid I got knocked off the offer as the surveyor and I both thought the problem was restricted to seized bearings.

Beware of any repairs- pits in my stock had been filled with epoxy which disintegrated and did for the bearings too.

If I were looking at an older Hanse I would ask a direct question about the history of the rudder stock.

Cheers
