Hi Folks

I'm looking to purchase a handheld VHF with DSC to put in a grab bag. I know Icom are about to launch a new handheld that fits this bill but as its so far untested and going to retail at around £350 I'm nervous. There is also the Standard Horizon HX851 that Marine Super Store are selling at £200 that has DSC.

Does anyone have any experience of the Horizon or can recommend an alternative?

Many thanks

Dan

I'm not sure that there are any alternatives. I have an ordinary SH handheld and it is an excellent thing, robust and stays charged for ages. Also has an AA battery pack as well as the internal battery.

I'd second the fact that the SH seem to have a good battery.
Mine has held its charge for at least a year. Not used it other than for emergency standby, but it is submersible so that along with my EPIRB in the grab bag is my idea if the chips are down.

I have one of those. The radio is really good -- on high power perfect comms with the mother ship at several miles distance.

The GPS is lacking elementary functions which would have been no problem to add, but without which the GPS section is of limited value :(

It's quite bulky.

That's it. Generally satisfied. I bought it primarily for the grab bag. For that purpose, it is without peer surely.

My SH h/h has been charged 6 times in 5 years, the last time being just before Xmas. It's still charged...........and with the AA battery pack that I prepared for it 4 years ago......(I THINK the AA's are still ok....) I can heartily recommend SH as a brand to buy.

Hi Folks

Thanks for all the replies to my post. I've just ordered from marine superstore
the HX851 it seems to fit the bill and at £200 good value for money.

Cheers

Dan
