Whilst attending to the furling line, I knelt down on the deck, my VHF clipped to my life jacket lodged the wrong side of the guard rail, with predictable results; the radio went over the side. This was very annoying given that I often have difficulty unclipping it anyway.

As a consequence I've gone for a floating replacement: Standard Horizon HX300E, over offerings by other vendors. The other advantages that attracted me was USB charging - no more charger cradle that always needed to be somewhere else and the fact that it flashes a red light when it hits the water.

Disadvantages: it's very fat - I can only just reach the PTT when holding it in my palm. It doesn't feel as solid (well, if it did, it would sink...)

Don't know what sort of boat you have, but unless the freeboard is pretty low I suggest you put a shrimping net on board!

If it floats, it should be waterproof at least. :) I went for an Icom, 'cos I've used them at work and they are usually bomb proof. It also has a flashing light that activates in the water, but I hope never to find out how well it works. Very pleased with its quality as a radio.
