Hand winch

Those are generally not geared. Geared are usually specified in the description. Also a strap is better than a wire cable.

I have yet to come across any such winch which is not geared.

Straps and wire have different operational environments. Length of pull, for one instance.

I cant speak for all trailer winches and I'd imagine they'd vary according from boat size to boat size but when I had one the gearing was ~2.5:1 .... I remember quite well how quickly the handle could spin when launching the boat and you'd forgotten to disengage it. Bloomin lethal if you were dozy. Even more so if you then tried to grab the horrid thing if you needed to arrest progress in a blind panic which as it turns out was more common than not with the slipway blues :(

thanks , its actually going to be mounted on my tractor and used to pull large haylage bales out of the field as its too darn wet to get in ( you will get that Sarabande). Thanks for the advice, the ad didn't state 'geared' so didn't want to get one that was a simple rotation jobby.

Almost certainly geared. You can see the gear on the drum and there will be a small gear on the shaft the handle attaches to.

When you said geared initially I thought you meant more than one gear. Yes that winch is geared but there are some available that have two positions to put the handle on and you have in effect a low gear and an even lower gear. These are very good for heavy boats. They are not so readily available though
