We use an old Magellan hand held GPS in the cockpit as a back-up to the chart plotter so we can get a general guide as to what's going on with speed and cross track error, distance to go etc. without leaving the cockpit.
We plug it into the boats 12v supply, so never worry about batteries. (If it were to lose battery life for long, it loses all the many, many waypoints now programmed in and it's a very tedious job to put them back in!!)
When I look at possible replacements, such as Garmin's eTrek and other, more modern versions, they seem not to have a 12v option.
Is there one out there still with this?
