My old hand held radio is well past it's best and it seems sensible to replace it with a DSC model.
I can add the new radio to my ships radio licence or independant portable licence.
I can see pros and cons for either and wonder what the forum thinks?

A DSC handheld cannot share a vessels MMSI number and must be registered independently with it's own MMSI number.

I don't have a DSC portable, but my ordinary handheld is on its own license. This means it's legal when I take it out on other boats, for example the succession of disintegrating old motorboats used by a mate. I have the T number marked on the back, though in practice I've just made up an appropriate "boat name" for these anonymous tubs. The only advantage of a shared license for a non-DSC portable is that it was cheaper in the days before station licenses became free.

Not sure about the pros and cons of a separate MMSI. I believe that you can link the two together, though, there's a spot in the main license for a "subsidiary" MMSI. Intended for ships' rescue boats and the like.
