It had to happen sooner or later. I've always been surprised that the moorings on the Barge Walk at Hampton Court were free.
Well, now they are still free....but only for the first 24 hours. After that its £5 per day. Not an Environment Agency charge but the Historic Royal Palaces.

So, crass reaction already....boat with notice stuck to window saying been here too long...must pay etc. Coming back from walk later noticed folks on boat but notice screwed up and thrown in bushes. Later still folks disappeared when warden comes down to collect !
There is no doubt about it...even boating has its fair share of tight gits and unreasonable behaviour.......

Good! for too long that mooring has been favored by liveaboards and narrowboats, they get there and take up the moorings for days if not weeks on end. Wish they would do the same at Tescos at Caversham but charge after 2 hours this would shift liveaboard peeps and allow boaties to get their shopping.

Steady boy you'll end up back in that hospital bed.

Whilst I understand your point especially the bit about Tesco's, I can only feel sad at yet another loss of a free mooring. The rich boat owner get's tucked up again.

Easiest way out of it, stick an anchor down fore and aft and take the ropes off the bank. They can’t touch you. Stay as long as you like providing you don’t create a hazard to navigation.

Alternatively if it's raining, windy or even if the streams running a bit fast claim international safe haven harbour status. That should keep them busy for a bit. Don't know if you can apply for political asylum though.

;o)

I agree with the post from Byron. And just like the 'night movers' - those that caused the problem will go uneffected and without paying. Moonfleet is a good example been there months and no action is taken. Hampton Court can demand payment and regular boaters will pay up. The rest just give a big up yours - then what - short of lifting the boat to a compound it goes no further

But it is still free, 1st night free, after that £5 a night. I don't feel that is unreasonable especially if it keeps the moorings free for people transitting the Thames.

I agree. Most folk only stay for one night anyway and I, for one, do appreciate being able to stay there. I remember the first time I went and being really surprised it was even possible to moor there, let alone free!

It would be nice if Crown Estates could make some of the bankside opposite Datchet available for overnight mooring.

I have. incidentally, emailed the HCP people to see if they could use some of the income to improve the mooring ring situation....I await a reply with interest.

Not a chance. Firstly there are moorings at Datchet albeit not very good but never-the-less useable. Secondly there is the security aspect for Windsor Castle. Security Patrols see a boat and they know its illegal. If there were moorings there they could be taken up by a whole army of terrorists and who would know until they struck?

What if you're rafted up? Do the outside boats pay? Is the fiver shared between the rafters? Does the inside boat get it free for the inconvenience?

Good idea tho... anything to keep moorings available to more!

I've never paid for a rafted up boat. The only place they actually state rafted boats will pay (to my knowledge ) is the moorings just topside of Wallingford Bridge. But there are signs there pointing this out. Shame realy because there used to be meadow moorings on the other side of the bridge but alas errosion has taken it's toll. The other place they try it on is Coockham by the old peoples home. the mooring signs are fake and if you don't present a hazard to navigation you can raft up. Don't take no grief from the woman collecting the fees just tell her the boat name and refer her to the EA for the details of owner etc.

Result.......

I have this morning received a reply from HCP to my email yesterday about mooring rings etc....
QUOTE:
Thank you for your email. Yes , this is new procedure introduced this
year and we have been please with peoples reaction to it. We do plan, as
a result of charging, to improve the facilities there which include new
rings, steps at the east end and some bins this winter.

I hope this answers your questions and if you have any other ideas of
how we can improve the mooring we would be glad to hear from you .

There's a result!

Well Done Hampton Court

Well, the rubbish bin did arrive earlier this year and got to HC yesterday to find nice new galvanised mooring rings being installed. Had word with the warden man this morning who said will also be placing more mooring rings along the concrete section but will take a bit longer. Also intend to maintain current status where first night is free of charge.
