Hammocks...

I have mixed feelings about the OCD tendencies of certain instructors on ways to rig and stow 'micks, but having come across some old-fashioned canvas, I thought I'd put my little grommet machine to the test and make up a hammock when lambing has finished.

Does anyone have a preference as to slinging fore and aft, or across the beam, in a small boat pls ?

Fore and aft - but, I only used it for lazing around in the sun in port. ( and mine wasn't canvas, it was net - nice and cool but needed a cushion )
If you're going to sling while under way, I guess it depends on where there is room - anyway I quickly learned it was good to have it just inches away from the deck.
