I promised my kids I'd get them a hammock to use on deck.

Anyone else use one? Where do you hang it? Our boat is quite small and we have a baby stay but I reckon I could rig the spinnaker pole high up and hang it underneath.

Has anyone made their own? I have some leftover acrylic canvas so I'm thinking of using that.

Eureeka! It's got the dimensions.
"Fabric 210cm x 140cm. Optimum distance between supports 280cm."

I see that's a 'double' hammock. Ooo err!

Do you know if the fabric is flat or shaped? In other words did it fold up flat?

Spi pole is supposedly 3.8m (J) which is a bit long but heh ho.

hamocks are flat rectangular pieces of cloth and you give them some shape acrodd by varing the length of the lanyards - longest in the middle, a bit shorter at the ends. Then you can if you wish use a spacer bar at each end to stop it turning into a tube with you are the filling.

We were taught to roll them up with bedding and clothes inside and lace the outside. That way they had some buoyancey in the event of the ship sinking.

Most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept in

Try one of these - simply ties to forestay and mast. It stuffs into a small bag - the hammock that is.

When I was in the navy spacer bars were banned for safety reasons. Properly rigged hammocks are superb for sleeping in. Not so flash if you have been out on the piss and have to find your hammock in the bin, and then hang it and climb in.

That's very useful. I'll make one up tonight. I've loads of webbing to finish the end of the cloth but I'll need to get some string for the lanyards. I presume they're one string running backwards and forwards.

How exactly do you rig your hammock

I have a big string hammock I bought in Central America (Costa Rica I think) 15 years or so ago. I have rigged it under the spinnaker pole all my boats since.

One of the most comfortable things I have ever slept in.:D

I have a spinnaker pole but only a cruising chute. Hence never use the pole! How exactly do you rig the hammock from your pole?

I rig the spinnaker pole on the foredeck from the mast using the up-haul (topping lift) and downhaul (fore guy) and tie the pole to the forestay to stop it swinging about. Then I run a short length of line from each end of the pole to the hammock and adjust the height/length of everything until the hammock with me in it is a few inches off the deck and clear of hatches and fittings.
