welcome to the forum.

whilst looking forward to a summer boating trip is great fun do make sure that you cross reference any information yourself from an accreditable source (your charts!) before heading off......just thought I would get that in.

heading west as you are most plan to stop off at Weymouth to give the crew a rest as much as to provide a realistic schedule should the weather be less than perfect (which of course it never is). Of the top of my head this would give 3 legs of about 60-70 miles each Hamble/weymouth/salcombe/St PP

Hamble St PP is about 100; Weymouth St PP about 70.

Cornwall..........well that's a book rather than a quick response on here - well worth a search on here for previous posts on the trip overall; loads of information.

Hi,

I would sugest you buy some basic PC chart plotting software and a good map (small craft portfolio). That will let you know all. In a Sessa 36 it is very doable, but roughstuff will detract from the fun element. As Duncan said, prepare for a port or two to get to in emergency!

Good Luck

Out of the Hamble and turn left. After a couple of miles bear right and follow till you get to some sticky up white bits with a red thingummy at the end. It all gets a bit vague from there so stop and ask again.

Where does Lymington (in the subject line) come into this?

On the other hand, he may be just like me and have all the charts and stuff on the boat, 300 miles away.

Solent/Weymouth 50miles? Weymouth/ Salcolmbe umm 65'ish. Salcolmbe/St peters port about 65 miles.

Isnt DR navigation all about making the most of all the information available to you, and using it to work up an estimate of where you are?

GPS and chart plotters do make life so much easier these days.... in the dark ages before they were invented, we used to use DR.

In the Windies, DR used to mean keeping an eye out for an inter-island aeroplane heading in the direction you are going - if they are still going the same way as you, then the odds are that you havent got there yet.
Or they are equally lost....
This method was especially useful for finding Barbados, which is 100 miles to windward of the Windward Islands, and low lying, hence can be difficult to see, especially if conditions are hazy.

I guess with a chart plotter and an AA Road Map one shouldnt have any problems getting from Hamble to Cornwall - just type in some post codes as way points, and follow the vehicles on the coastal roads whereever possible (and use DR in between!).
