Hamble to Dartmouth

If you can go to Studland and anchor there rather than Yarmouth, it really helps it means you carry the tide much further across Lyme Bay.

Yes that’s a good idea thank you. May be doable. My goal is to get to Dartmouth efficiently, it’s in the nature of a delivery trip rather than cruise

If its more of a delivery trip. as long as you have a reasonable forecast just go offshore.
Dont worry about the tides they will cancel themselves out. Keep well away from headlands and there is less worry.

I'd rather be pushing a foul tide in Lyme bay rather than many places East of Portland Bill.

Indeed. Get up into the bay, there is not much tide.
But knowing whether we're talking neaps or springs would help, plus the type/size of boat.

You cannot ignore the tide at Hurst, it doesn't "cancel out".

The boat is 34" long keel, 24 ' waterline. I work on 4 1/2 knots but aim to beat it. If the engine will help, I will use it. I'll go when the weather and crew align, could be springs, could be neaps

I would have a plan to get to the most convenient port without too much taking. They are nice although Dartmouth is my favourite. But Torquay, Brixham or Salcombe, are equally good starting point.

I am undecided about Weymouth, stop on the way west but tend to go to studland going east.

Which highlights how it would be helpful to know this before commenting. Making 6 knots through water is easy enough on my latter earlier boats, either with some engine assist on a W33 ketch we had 14 years or easily beating 6kts under sail on a 41ft one ton cup cruiser racer. Going back farther in time with a LIz 30 we planned on 5.5 kts but did manage as much as 6.5/7.0+ on memorable spinnaker reaches in rare conditions not usual prevailing westerlies.
