Hamble School of Yachting....

I did some instructing for a 'prestigeous' sea school based in Poole, whose boats were worked 24/7/365 continuously, with maintenance including engine repairs, done when boat was stuck in 'harbour' for the pupil's sailing weekend, considered part of their CC/DS/YM training. The fact that a Hamble School boat was actually leaving a marina, is testamony indeed to the quality of their craft. ;)

Brilliant!

Reminds me of a time when I was doing a 'mile-builder' with a 'prestigious' sea school on the Hamble (not HSY). The first 4 days were spent hanging around the marina whilst the engine was replaced. I appreciate a Biscay crossing can get a bit mundane, but much the crossing was much less mundane than walking around the same marina for 4 days. One of my fellow crew members was somewhat less polite and explained to the sea school principal exactly what they thought of their hard earned holiday being 'wasted' whilst the sea school undertook a planned engine replacement .

A big thumbs up to HSY. I had an RYA Coastal Skipper course booked with them this month and being unable to go ahead, they promptly refunded my deposit. No twists and turns to try to get me to book a later date, accept a voucher etc, just put the money straight back on my card without quibble.

When many businesses are struggling for cash, and HSY must be suffering too, they put customer service ahead of their business needs. Fingers crossed they will weather the storm (excuse pun) as I will be booking with them as soon as the doors open again.

Just for sake of interest, does anyone here use pre departure checklist, or pre arrival? By memory, or list? As I age, I like lists more.

I came across SAFER somewhere from Australia: Sails, Anchor, Fenders, Engine, Ropes (apologies) and to this we have added I for instruments and M for Maddy - lifting up the Aries servo arm (she's called Maddy). It's our pre-departure and pre-mooring list. But, as said elsewhere, we do the tasks first.

+1

A lock is probably not the best place to start fumbling around with nav lights, more of a mid passage job, as long as they had a torch handy, and sailed defensively, all acceptable risks would have been covered.

I'm not sure that explanation will assuage any doubts about settling an insurance claim in the event of an accident.

Excellent practice, and no doubt then that WW will be back as a customer as soon as its possible to his course.

Wish I could say the same about my usual boatyard: lockdown cut in just before my booked re-launch and they are insisting on charging me for hard-standing for the last 6-7 weeks!! (n)
