Despite my best efforts I am finding it very difficult to get my mooring on the Hamble sub-let. Here we go again. Suitable for yachts between 25 and 30 ft it is a pile mooring located off Mercury Yacht harbour and has a pontoon to berth on. Plenty of depth, and off the main channel I have found it a very good place to be with young children. Sub-lets of these moorings must be done via the Harbour Master however you still only pay the standard rate (about £550) for the year. Available from April 1st or earlier by negotiation and for at least a whole year and most probably until Sep 03. Contact me by PM, e-mail (pjumbop@hotmail.com) or the Harbour Master's office (ask for Mrs Thurman) on 01489576387. Ask Ref. mooring F65-66 Inner.

I think the lady to ask for is Mrs. T. M. Surman.Have you filled in and deposited with the Harbour Master the form "Application to sub-let a mooring on the River Hamble"? I did this a few years ago ( I wanted to let it for the winter) and they did not manage to let my mooring - which is not far from yours! However I would have thought that if you are prepared to let it for a year you should get a taker

Thanks for that. Yes I've filled in all the forms but it all seems to much trouble for them! I suppose that once they have their money they don't care too much. The mooring alongside me was empty for 3 years. Thanks for the nod on the name but I only went on what I heard and Thurman seemed to get the rigght lady! Still can't believe it is this hard to sub let a mooring on the river.

Thanks for your reply. Are you a member of the River Hamble Mooring Holders Association? If not and you have feelings about the way the River is run you might like to join. Let me know if you want the contact address - it only costs £5 a year!

Yes I am a member and I think I have the same concerns they do. I thought the yacht clubs were mad breaking away and negotiating direct with the crown commisioners however I now see that they were right as they don't have to deal via the harbour master. My view is that the habour master should administer the river and a mooring holders association run the moorings. That does of course have big implications but has to be the logical way forward. I have questions about the funding of the Harbour Master and his team, if this is done by the council is this expenditure not going to come under scrutiny as it is not required to fulfil his statutory duties? If he is being funded by income from the moorings who audits this and is able to regulate his expenditure. I feel at present he is not accountable to the river users and should be. In short there is a need for considerable improvement in the management of the river and I don't see it hapening in the near future. As for attracting visitors ........... well look at the public facilities in Hamble - I wouldn't visit!
