Planning a trip out on Sunday but not planning to go far, only up to Hamble.

I know you have Banana Wharf at Port Hamble but can anyone tell me what places are there to have lunch if I stop at Hamble Point Marina?

I seem to recall there was a restaurant at Mercury but is it any good?

Options at Hamble Point limited to just the one - the Ketch Rigger - unless you are prepared to take a fairly long walk into the village. Food at the Ketch Rigger is pretty good, but their sandwiches are expensive for what you get.

There are many more options accessible from Port Hamble, since it is only 5 mins walk into the centre of the village.

It is a while since I ate up at Mercury, so can't really comment.

Edit: There is also the option of visiting Warsash (Rising Sun, etc) or going further up river.

If just stopping off for lunch you could see if there is space on Hamble Town Quay. Then you have quite a few lunch options.

Stop at Port Hamble and walk into the village. Food is best in either the King and Queen (pub food) or the Whyte Hart (better chef with fresh veg and not all deep fried).

Victory does pub food which is ok-ish.

Bugle food over priced pretentious factory packaged rubbish. If anyone else tries to serve me french fries in a miniscule galvanised bucket I'll go postal.

RAFYC does good food if yacht clubs are your thing.

Cafe on the quay does sandwiches etc.

Thanks Angele,

Just looked on their website and it looks like they only do sandwiches and jacket spuds at lunchtime. :(

I am an MDL bertholder and I want to get in to one of theirs for free. Trouble is they can't tell me if there is room at Port Hamble until the sunday morning (I am a 50 footer). That is why I wanted to see what was at the other marinas in case I end up going there.

Agreed, Haven't been back since and it's been quite a while now. So good to know it's not yet worth revisiting.

Personal views I know, but I think just the opposite. The Bugle is one of my favourite eateries in Hamble - in fact second only to the River Rat. One might say the food is a bit pricey, but I have always thought it especially tasty and most definitely not "factory packaged". My only disappointment was that they took the pork belly off the menu when they changed it a month ago. That was yum!

Hamble Village is a nice 10-15 min walk from Hamble Point Marina marina, either up School lane or if its dry across the heath, turn right through the gate just outside the marina and follow the path towards the village, don't go that way if its wet as it gets very muddy!

The Ketch at Hamble Point do quite a good sunday roast, at least they used to. As far as I know they're still doing it.

The Bugle Hamble and Boathouse at Swanwick are under the same ownership, and although a bit pretentious are OK. The loyalty card is worthwhile getting, but the credit can only be used mid week.

My favouraite, mostly for the best view of the river, is the Waters Edge at Mercury but not everyone's cup of tea. The owner is brother of Stuart at the Whyte Harte, probably the best Sunday lunch.

If you want something different then Cinnamon Bay do an all you can eat Indian Buffet every Sunday - opposite the Church just up from the Whyte Harte.

Boomerangs is quite good, but I haven't been in yet since the refurb.

Also overlooked is Castaways opposite the Bugle / Royal Southern.

If you want a bit of a walk from the Elephabt / Deacons yards, the Fox & Hounds / Lone Barn Bursledon is good, as off course is the ZOld Ship at Swanwick. Then of course there is the heavilly over priced Jolly Sailor, where you can stil reminisce about Howards Way.

And if your feeling really adventurous the Horse & Jockey at Curdridge.

King & Queen is our favourite for those occasional snowed in days in mid Winter, after a few hours sledging. Too full of would be Atlantic single handers most weekends.

I would say that it is best if your expectations about quality of food on the Hamble are kept at a modest level, that way you will not be too hacked off, I agree with the negative comments re the Bugle and as for the Boat House at Swanwick it is ****, it is so full of smoke it's as if they are holding an indoor barbecue.
Having said that I have had one good Hamble meal and that was in the Navigator at Swanwick but fairly expensive

Excellent Sunday roasts at The Olde Whyte Harte in Hamble village. Worth the walk from Hamble Point if you can't get in Port Hamble.

Ah now you are talking! :)

Just about equidistant from either HP or PH too.

I have to stick up for The Bugle and say that every time we've eaten there, it's been great and we go back time and again because of it. A far cry from the Boathouse at Swanwick which truly is appalling.
