Please can we have more info on the durability of these seals, in view of the postings a few days ago. I have one on my boat which has not been a problem so far, but you've got me worried. Is it simple converting to the Volvo seal? I wasn't aware that Halyard had stopped making them.

I should stop worrying, the Halyard seals never seem to leak water and the overheating appears to be a problem only when you run at high speed or for a very long time.

The first indication you will have of trouble will be the oil reservoir going down.

Mine did about five seasons before there was any sign of trouble (and they worked quite hard).

I would certainly think long and hard about replacing them with anything made by Volvo, in view of their frequently suspect design and excessively inflated prices.
The same can be said for the Bukh seal which is very similar.

Instead have a look at the PSS Seal distributed in the UK by Les Hill of Lake Engineering (Poole) Ltd, tel 01202 621631.
That's inexpensive, proven, simple and well engineered.

The same Volvo seal has been on my Konsort since it was built in 1984.

All I do before launching each season is squeeze a "worm" of molyslip grease under the seal lip, and rotate the shaft by hand. Then when in the water, squeeze the sides of the seal until a drop of water comes out. Unsqueeze and leave all season.

I was given a brand new spare seal, and it remains wrapped in its box - where I hope it will stay!

regards,
Philip

Pleased to read about the 1984 Volvo seal. My handbook says to replace the Volvo seal after 5 years or 500 operating hours but as it does not leak, and on advice from this forum, I have decided to leave well alone.

PSS Seal

Thanks for the tip Charles concerning the PSS seal.

Although the Volvo seal seems ok the PSS has Imperial size options.

Also, something I did not consider - If you have a comventional packing gland with no 'room' to clamp the bellows onto ( as in my case) you can reverse the packing spigot thereby giving you a lip for the bellows. The 'lip' has to be a minimum of 1 inch for a 1 inch shaft and proportionately longer for other shafts.

It is a pity that economics have persuaded Halyard to stop making the HMI. It is a very good product.

I can only add that I have had one running for 2500 hours and have not, so far had any leaks or other problems, even though it has been twice disturbed by engine work.

Might be a good idea to buy a spare set of internal rubber rings before they sell out.
