halyard chafe

Last week I noticed a bad case of halyard chafe 1-2 ft from the business end of my spinnaker halyard. Any ideas of what might cause this? Last year I found the same on the genoa halyard that is running on a different sheave.

Sounds like the halyard is rubbing on the masthead unit. I don't know what setup you have but I have a secondary "turning block" attached to the mast head unit forward of the spinnaker halyard sheave so as the spinny twists about the halyard cannot rub on the mast head unit.

the halyards may be twisted round each other. do they run freely ?

I was going to suggest halyard wrap - but obviously not now.

Next suggestion is exposed rivet inside truck

I would suspect that you have the halyards crossed over one of the strengthening trusses that bisect the mast. The only way to be sure is to take the top of the mast off and peer inside - not very easy when the mast is already vertical.

Too true, I had a new rope main halyard that was getting chafed in the middle. Decided to pull out the spreader bars. Damn me if the spreader bars weren't half cut through by the old wire halyard. Could have been very nasty.
