Halyard Bags, Studs or Turnbutton Fasteners, SS or Plated?

I'm new to sewing stuff up, I wanted to make some halyard bags for my 38 footer, they need to hold a sizeable amount of rope. Would press studs do? or should I use turnbuttons? The turnbuttons will hold a bigger load but I don't like the tops sticking out. The other issue is whether I should use stainless steel or plated fasteners. All input welcome please.

I think KS's halyard bags were press studs / "poppers", and they were perfectly satisfactory. After all, the load is across the stud, not up off it.

I would avoid any ferrous metal except stainless, on deck.

Our halyard bags are supported underneath as they rest on the cockpit seat, all we use are a couple of suction cup hooks and hook through the eyelets, no drilling and are removable as and when required. May not work for you but great for us.

I need to fix them each side of the cockpit with half the stud screwed to the GRP

I meant nickel plated brass

I have two, one under the winches on the coachroof which is simply screwed into grp with added s/s penny washers. This takes a lot of rope, cans of beer, etc. and is very strong. The other is simply tack sewn at the top onto port dodger to take roller-reefing line, again strongly attached and easy enough to remove/replace if thats what you need to do?

Great idea.. Sewing project this weekend is a bag for the port dodger to take the furling line..

Not sure why Rigger Mortice preferred Lift the Dot fastenings earlier since when the bags are removed they would leave some quite pointy spikes.. I guess the bags are rarely removed..

I did buy some press studs (with screw fixings) from Hobbycraft recently.. They were labelled as 'marine' so I might try them at the weekend..

although Fergie_Mac66's response earlier about using Velcro is starting to sound good.

Some of the strong real Velcro with the fluffy part stuck to the bulkhead and the hook part sewn to the bag.. Sounds extremely strong, the velcro would be out of sunlight, no holes to be drilled, removable and nothing sticky outy either. ..

Velcro and sewing maching out at the weekend..

Only removed when laid up over winter, I assume. Not so much tumbling around the cockpit then, so the pointy spikes are less of a problem.

Unlike the ones used for our new C&J sprayhood, incidentally - the top of the windscreen now looks like a punk's collar. This is particularly galling when the aluminium extrusion has a boltrope track built into it for this specific purpose, which their "designed for this specific model" sprayhood cheerfully ignores

SavageSeaDog - Mine will also be for a 38ft boat so need to be quite big.. Lines for Spinnaker halyards, main/genoa halyards, pole up and downhauls, chute tack line and four reefing lines most of which are +23m long..

They also need to be fastened securely enough to cope with a lie down or even a full roll.. You'd not want to come back up and find all the lines trailing in the water..

Keep us posted on your sewing progress.

prv.. A punk's collar.. brilliant!

I know what you mean.. we have the spikes when the sprayhood is folded down (every time we sail) and I'm just amazed nobody has tripped on them so far.. Perhaps one day well get lift the dots with lay flat or push down spikes..

Martin, best of luck with the velcro. I have this for cabin cushions, sewn onto top back and stuck to grp. Blinkin stuff keeps pulling away from grp. Tried cleaning surface with meths, etc. eventually glued velcro tape permanently to bulkhead. Might not want to do that in your cockpit? Also, dont believe the descriptions for 'super-strong velcro', etc. some of this stuff is totally pathetic, you really need to try before you buy, which is a hastle?

Seashoreman.. Understood and yes I do have the original 'Velcro' brand and not a cheaper replica.

It seems to stick well to grp and does manage to hold up 6ft long wood ceiling panels.. I plan to clean with acetone unless anyone can suggest a better cleaner.

At least if they do come off after a year then we'll be back to square one after a quick cleanup.. If they do work though then great!

I have "lift the dot" fasteners and have not found them a problem. However, what I would strongly recommend is that you use a mesh for the bottom of the bags. My original ones were all canvas with just eyelets for drainage at the bottom and green halyards were the order of the day. Having changed to mesh bottoms, the problem has been all but eliminated.
