I keep a couple of hi-vis tabbards under the drivers seat on both our cars. If ever we break down we can be wearing them before we step out of the car on the hard shoulder.

I started keeping hi vis vests in the car for continental trips, as they were mandatory. Several times I've been very glad they were there. Regard them as expendable - I've donated mine to other road users, or left one to mark a fly-tipped pile of hardcore in an unlit country lane - so I now buy them a few at a time on Ebay .

Herein Switzerland it's a legal requirement to have a hi-viz, triangle and first aid kit in the car.
