H/H or fixed VHF for Shetland

Went to the doc and he wants to know which would the better option for a Shetland used in the clyde and what unit is flavour of the month?and it's not for him but his friend!

My first choise would be a fixed mount VHF, Icom or Standard Horizon (the latter if no GPS unit fitted as it is available with built-in GPS receiver for adding position to DSC messages)

If the flexibility of a mobile or H/H is needed it is going to be at the cost of reduced transmitting power and lack of proper antenna.

+1. HH will have much shorter range, and that might matter one day in a mayday etc

If dashboard space is tight or you care about aesthetics remember the garmin and raymarine have a black box behind the scenes and the only part on show is the handset
