Hello Boat Boffin's. I've acquired a manual windlass and I'm replacing my anchor chain which is well past it's sell by date. I'm fairly sure (but not certain) that I need 10 mm chain. What I don't know is the link length required.
So two questions:
(a) How do I measure the link size and length?

(b) As it's a manual windlass is the link length that important?

I don't have the previous owners details so no help there.

Thanks for any advice.

It will be short link chain but there are various link differences, some of which are known as 'calibrated' for various makes of windlass. Chandleries mostly stock the basic stuff but you may need to order calibrated from a specialist. The best way to find out what you need is to take the gypsy along with you to check that the chain fits it.

My experience with both manual and electric windlasses is that they did not need anything special. Lewmar seem to have a requirement for calibrated but I have never owned one of theirs.

If 10mm, there'sa big difference in link size between DIN & ISO specification. You need to take the chainwheel off and make sure you can get a full wrap of links around it. Just measuring 2 or 3 links isn't accurate enough.

Yes, it does matter as links will jump out and chain will run free on payout and will jam when hauling. I found out the hard way!

Cheers Guys. Very helpful as always.

I believe chain makers measure chain on a 5 link basis. IE they use a calliper that fits over 5 links laid out tight. Seems this might equate to 17D using the Hackett chart. This would be easy to check in a chandlers using a vernier calliper . This irons out individual irregularities.
