What diameter anchor rope would you think is best for a 10mm chain gypsy? I have read that 3 strand nylon (rather than multiplait) is best but which size? It needs to be spliced to 10mm chain.
Ta!

3 strand nylon is terrible stuff, it hardens when stretched .
anchor plait is far superior i would think 18 > 20m/m would be ok.
I have 18m/m spliced to my 8 m/m chain & that is ok on my S-L Anchorman capstain

16 or 18mm spliced to 10mm chain is the norm. Either 3 strand or multistrand (anchorplait). Make sure you use a long splice that will go over the gypsy. Not always effective on a horizontal axis windlass as the grip is only over 90 degrees. See the Jimmy Green website for instructions for suitable splices, or buy ready spliced rodes.

Ah! My windlass is horizontally mounted. I seem to recall Lofrans do a "pressure finger" to push rope into the gypsy, on newer machines anyway. Mine is c2000. However it does have a drum alongside the gypsy.

"Gypsy friendly mooring rope"

Should not contain copper, aluminium, ferrrous metal, or anything which can be flogged at the scrappies - despite all the new rules about not being paid cash which are so neatly circumvented by having a window next to the weighbridge, where cheques can be cashed....

My Lofrans Cayman seems to work OK with 3 strand but never done it with lots of load on as I have 50m chain so rarely have to use any rope.
