This summer, we were sailing in the Baltic for more than 4 months, visiting 4 different countries. I had to buy a different SIM for my iPad for each, to avoid ridiculous roaming charges for using my UK SIM. Since the networks tend to want you to have a local address before they sell you one, it involved quite a few negotiations. I have just opened the latest RYA mag, to find an advert for GYMSIM, which appears to solve those problems. Has anyone got any experience, good or bad, of it?

We have a Gymsim and have found it to be a useful tool. we have set ours to top up automatically if the credit gets low so we are never without a phone. There can be cheaper deals available locally but for a 'one size fits all' setup it makes life a lot easier.

now Vodafone has stopped passport and introduced a £3 a day charge.

Not sure if we're talking about the same thing but I've just checked my UK Voda pay as you go account and found I was still on Passport for roaming calls and they had moved me to Smartstep for UK calls. Suggest people check their accounts, the plans they had put me on were a ripoff.

Must check my Voda Portugal charges/plan when I get back.

We've had a gymsim for years now. It's linked to a card so it tops up automatically. Not too sure what the data rates look like in comparison to a local sim but for phone calls it makes sense as it costs us nothing for incoming calls, costs callers a UK rate and has reasonable rates for outgoing calls.

Vodafone: I have had a text from them saying the passport will be switched off as of 1 November and the 'euro traveller' or some such will take its place. This will give me the same access as in UK for £3 a day. Not impressed and will be switching phone off as of 1 Nov, as £3 per day for services I don't use is a rip off.

Seems to work for us

Hi,

We have had the Gym Sim now for three years and it is great. Worked all the way from UK to Cyprus. Still using it. No incoming call charges and it is much much lower outgoing calls than all the other sim cards.

How does it work for data

Ive also just spotted the ad in the RYA mag and feel inclined to give it a go next year.

I see that GYMSIM do a data SIM as well. What dongle do I need to use data? I have a Turkcell dongle(that never worked properly). Could I get that unlocked and then use the GYMSIM for data ?

Probably. Unlock the modem and try it with a PAYG UK SIM first.

In Turkey and Greece GYMSIM costs €0.45/Mb + €0.99 for every month you don't use it.

We have used Gymsim for years - works fine and if you have a problem they answer an email within a few hours (problems generally tend to be of our own making).

Thanks all. In Greece my UK Orange roaming charges of 25p / min seem to make a change to GYMSIM unnecessary but in Turkey it seems a good deal.

Some others here:
PrePaidGSM > Operators > International Cards

(That page seems a bit out of date - there's probably a better list somewhere.)

If you choose one that has a +44 number it's cheaper for UK callers.

There are often annual and other charges to take into account. Geosim charges in dollars - or used to - to add to the fun.
