Folks,

Just to let you know that I had all my Raymarine kit stolen off the boat at Largs Marina. Not sure when it happened as it was all under the helm cover and we haven't been down regularly...probably in the last 6-7 weeks!

Obviously a warning to keep a look out as it looks like a pro job - no damage...they were removed cleanly and the cover replaced!

Would also suggest you loom out for someone trying to flog it...1 x e127, 1 x p70 (pushbutton not rotary) and 1 x i70.

Should have taken the serial numbers before installing but didn't - another lesson learned!! :(

Be warned...Dod:mad:

AND beware the next thing, they wait for you to replace with all new kit then steal that, often getting the boxes it came in as well. Happened here when a load of old rubbish gear was nicked, no real value, then the new stuff went.

The serial numbers will be on the warranty paperwork, try contacting the installer/supplier as they would have registered at time of install.

The kit usually comes with 3 self adhesive labels with the serial number.
You may still have these stickers unused tucked inside the manuals.
(I usually stick one on the manual itself.)

Will your insurance cover it? Often they want signs of forced entry. The trouble with the new Raymarine gear is installation is done from the front where as the older kit you had to have access from behind.
The advantage is speed of installation for boat builders/installers but it makes it easier to nick.

After the first theft off my boat (Holyhead 1974) I got a small electric engraver and engraved the name of my business on everything.
So the next time the boat was broken into they took stuff which had been engraved.
One of the items was a Ship to Shore radio which in those days was about the size of a briefcase.
Anyway a few months later they raided someones home and found my radio and the engraving identified it as mine. (they were prosecuted)
So I started taking stuff home. (Still engraved)
However I then had a burglary (at home) and the thieves took my boat bag.
6 months later the Police were searching the car of a well known villain and there was a bag in the boot, on opening, engraved across the front of the Echo Sounder was XXXXXX Garage.
So again my engraving of stuff resulted in a prosecution.
Considering it only takes a few moments to un-plug things, I still do it.

This is not uncommon in both domestic and business burglaries.
A few years ago my workshop was raided and stock taken.
They waited a week until stock replaced and they then came back again .

Replaced stolen goods again (Icom electronic stuff) and they came back yet a third time.
We had been increasing security on each occasion.

On the third raid they could not gain access by normal methods so they literally drove a vehicle through the front of the building, demolishing most of it.
Thieves were never caught but pretty certain it was home grown local scumbags (not imports :)) who had visited us previously to case the joint.
Just out of interest, had exactly the same senerio at a previous business premises, but they only came back once that time.
First time via the door, second time through the roof.

Really feel for you df I hope the scum are caught and that you insurer's play ball.

Afraid to say I leave nothing on my boat that's easily liftable (new word :) ) It's a right pain taking all the electronics home then refitting when were going out but it's the only way to beat them, without breaking the law yourself that is :nonchalance:

Our Ins covers kit affixed / bolted to the vessel, many do not

Sorry to hear that dodfisher, however it has always struck me that nav kit on open boats is a panacea for thieves - high value, easy to sell on, easy to remove, easy to access, owners seldom on board. I'm genuinely surprised it isn't more common.

Doesn't help you much now, but I guess it may be worth fitting nav kit with through bolts and locknuts with big penny washers behind, so at least they're a bit more difficult to remove. The flip side of that of course, is that thieves may force it out and damage the boat as well.

Thanks for the comments guys - only time will tell whether the insurers will play ball. Will update on here so everyone knows the outcome and who the insurer is (good or bad outcome)!

Others may not be aware but Raymarine Equipment can be registered on the Raymarine website.
This is useful to store serial numbers plus shows warranty expiry dates.

+1 I do the same and agree it is a pain, I also do what Jim@sea has done, post code kit using an etch kit. Maybe smart water is a better option than engraving these days.

Sorry to hear about this and, as others have said, I hope they catch whoever was responsible.

It would be good if you could get Nav gear that had a quick release function so you could easily take it home with you.

Thats worrying| we keep our boat in Largs too where in the marina was yours?

there have been a few dinghys taken from the sailing club boat park too so i guess someone is "working" the area

maybe worth letting as many people know as possibe,so everyone can be more vigilant

Have you spoken to the office? I think they tend to hush up things like this for fear people will go elsewhere but that only makes it easier for thieves as people dont take proper precautions

Think I'll go & remove my plotter first chance I get

hope you get sorted with the insurace though

ken

Ken, mine is way out on N-38 so it's a bit out of the way. But that's no excuse! :(

Agreed - we need to pass the word.

The office were, as you can imagine, not that interested! I agree that they want to keep the publicity down. I sent an email to Carolyn Elder which she replied to...pretty tame. She asked a few questions which I responded to but no reply back...pretty typical! She said that putting cameras along the pontoons would infringe people's civil liberties! Pah! Would find it hard to believe that someone is watching the videos and getting all excited!??

Will keep you posted on how the insurance claim comes along

Cheers

Dod

I also had a problem with theft in Largs haven and at the time several others were having the same problem turned out it was rife down there and not one bit interested in the office security is poor at best!
