Following my last post bring a Contessa 32 back to Plymouth on Saturday, we did in fact set out on Saturday Morning at 08:00. Having checked the boat out, she was in immaculate condition. The wind was SW initially at 20 25 knots, and the forecast due to moderate further. Our course was 305T, so wind on the beam. The sea state was rough and quite confused with a large swell coming from the south west and a confused southerly set, making the motion extremely inconsistant and uncomfortable.

As the boat had an inner forestay and a hanked no 3 working headsail, we set this and 2 reefs in the main, with the 3rd ready to go.

By 12:00 the wind had increased to 25- 30 knots, and had headed marginally, but we were still doing 6.5 kts, but were now heavily pressed in the higher end, and thinking about a further reef in the main.

The mid day shipping forecast bought warnings of Portland Plymouth gale now ceased, new gale imminent SW 7 to 8 backing S and increasing severe gale 9 at times.

By 15:00 we were some 30 miles from Start Point, and near to making the decision of whether to continue to Plymouth or divert to Brixham. As the wind was heading slightly, and we really wanted to be in before we got the predicted weather, we bore off for Brixham onto a broad reach.

The motion was now more sloppy, but easier, and having buried my head in the locker looking for a bucket for the first sick casualty, I also suffered - for the first time in 15 years!!!. ETA was now 20:30 in Brixham, with an easy sail ahead - both patients retired to their bunks to recover, leaving the other 2 (highly competent) guys to manage.

We duly arrrived in Brixham and cleaned up enjoying a nice meal on board with the ebespacher running full blast. The wind dully came through late in the night. I suppose we could have made Plymouth, but I didn't fancy being on that lee shore from Start to Plymouth with the threat of a major gale.

Do I like heavy weather sailing?? I would rather not! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

well done anyhow!

Good for you, excellent stuff. I was pretty sure you would be stuck.
Did you go up the Little Russel or South round the island? I had a right wigging in the Little Russel on a moderate day!

We went up the Little Russel - The tide had just turned North, so all was fairly flat there.

We went up the Little Russel - Surprised that you didn't go West of the Casquettes.

Hi We went up the little Russel and turned west round the top of Guernsey.

Well done. We had a good bashing at the top end of the LR last year. North going stream with a southerly 3 blowing, flat as a pancake until we got past the Petite Canupe beacon. Standing white water for about 1/4 to 1/2 mile with wave clear over the deck and sprayhood, then flat calm again. Must have ben some sort of tidal conflict with water pouring back round the top end of Guernsey via the Doyle Channel, meeting an eddy coming round the top of Herm and then having a punch up with the north bound stream up through the Russel.

Well done probably the right decision to go for Brixham, a boat was lost with 3 or 4 crew just outside the Mew Stone a few years back similar conditions comming from Cherburge I think.

Really suprised you left with a new boat to you all and a gale forecast.....well done you got away with it and no doubt an exciting and fast sail........that said though with an untried boat any slight problem enrute with the prevailing forcast and the crew sucumming to Mal de Mare things may indeed have been differant!!!

Too many times in my past RNLI life was I called out to folk that underestimated the strength of the wind and forecast!!

However .. Chris is hardly a tyro in the first flush of youth and inexperience .. I don't think he "got away with it" , I suspect he had a jolly good time enjoying what sailing is all about IMHO! I suspect your call outs were rarely to ancient old mariners in Contessa 32's capable of single handing round the world the wrong way in a Tshirt and a pair of flip flpos?

Road......even the worlds most experianced at times get it wrong.....yes I guess they had a great sail and I am sure they enjoyed the experiance but having spent many years at sea in all type's of vessels my own decision would have been to wait given all the circumstance's........little point in thrashing both a boat and crew unless there is a desperate need....but then again life would be so boring if we all felt the same.

We went over every thing in great detail before we left, and I was more than satisfied that she was up to it. I think one has an instinct on going on a boat as to whether you are happy with it.....

Starboard

A f'cast of 20 -25 knots on the beam, and moderating is hardly cause for staying put, unless you've a girl in that port too!

If that was the forcast not a problem....but that WAS not the case....The original post on this forum was for any weather site's that maybe help the forumite make his mind up on the forcast weather as he had seen one forcast that was not great and was obviouslly looking for one that was better..!!! I posted a link to the Bracknell synoptic charts that I use on a day to day basis...looking at those for saturday they showed a deepening low to the sw of Ireland and a high over N France......winds were being squeezed between the two and it was obvious to me that the wind would probably touch gale force during the weekend sometime!! this proved to be the case.
as for other comments here about me getting soft or maybe considering a canal boat I will treat them with the contempt they deserve..........As for the original post.....why ask for weather infomation then disregard what most people told him.....not only that come back a few days later to boast how he made the passage safely despite everything he was told previous.......as I said before this time he got away with it with little more than a dose of the "Mal de Mare"....I wonder what we would all have been saying if things had not turned out so good..........one thing for sure I know most experianced folk on here would have had a word or two to say for setting off when a gale was forecast!!!
