looking at one of the threads below i realised i haven't cleaned my raw water strainer since i had the boat. its a gunmetal tube and all i've ever had before is a vetus strainer i could simply takew the top off. not that i'm really concerned because it can't be all that complicated but before i unscrew the end what should i be prepared for?

assume i know enough to close the seacock......... :)

Inside will probably be a removable tubular filter element, often brass or stainless steel, but maybe nylon; pull it out and remove any 'gunk' that's stuck in the little holes. Replace it, refit the cap and open the sea cock; job done.

There may be a bit of back flow from the engine raw water hose, inside there may be a mesh strainer that is plastic with built in seal moulded into the top and bottom, or it could just be a perforated metal basket in tubular form that is quite stiff. The top may well have a rubber gasket inside on the top. The crud will be in the inside. Just clean it up and wash it and look inside with the basket removed. Check the lid, lightly grease and reassemble.
