guidance on outboard size for a 12\'6\" Foreland Dingy

Have been trying to locate guidance on how to choose the most appropriate sized outboard for a 12'6" GRP hulled Foreland Dingy and would appreciate advice on where to look or where to access the "rules" for calculating such things? Also could someone explain the difference (physical and peformance) between long, standard and short shafted engines?

The diference in the shaft lenght is only to get the prop in the water at the approprate depth i.e. with the cavitation plate level with the bottom of the hull. Different boats require different shaft lenghts to do this.

I just got a 3.65 metre/around 11' dinghy, and although i havent tried it yet, the dealer said that the 6hp johnson would get us at an appropriate speed, although if I was really interested in speed, it could take around a 20hp, but he said that with 5 of us in it would still plane, so depends on how fast you really want to go i imagine

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, I concur with Davido - and yes, the 12'6" Foreland dinghy is a nice wee vessel!

Rule of thumb 8- 10HP per person plus 10 for boat , provides excellant performance up to 4.5m

That sounds very high for small dinghies. A 4 man 3.0m dinghy is usually rated up to 15 hp, your rule of thumb would have it at 50 hp!

Maybe its more appropriate to boats over 4m?

Also sounds like you're refering to planing performance. The Foreland is a round-bilged general purpose dinghy.
