Go West, after a overlong snooze on the shore, is going back in the water on July 8th so I thought she needed a bit of a spruce up for the summer.

Well, I wasnt wrong. Initially we thought the teak on the stern needed sanding, but it turned out it just needed a bloody good clean.

What an amazing difference. Is that just oiled teak then?

How on earth did he do it?

Liberal application of elbow grease...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did you use the wessex chemicals stuff? Which is absolutely wonderful. I got mine after it being reccommended by TCM, it really is great stuff.

I have had good results from this simple method;
at dusk, in cool or damp weather, soak decks and liberally apply washing up liquid with a soft brush. leave overnight. then hose down. clean decks, no scrubbing to wear down the teak, no chemicals.

good for maintenance - this was a bit beyond maintetnace however.......

We used the onwards 2 part cleaner and in the picture of the bows it has been sealed with semco. The cleaner is very harsh and you wouldn't want to use it often. It makes the wood soft so you can rub away the ridges with a pan scourer and elbow grease, this is less agressive than sanding. The teak is so thick on the boat though there is no risk whatsoever of wearing it away, which is part of why it looks so good (again) now.

I've also had good results with the A glaze teak cleaner on my own boat but it's mail order only as far as I know.

Pricey stuff - it used 100 quids worth of stuff in this 24ft boat (with a bit left over) but it was grubby and ridged.

Does look nice now, Jez has promised me a blast once she's launched so bring it on.

I used to use semco but have given up on the sealer coat. Do use the 2 part acid cleaner every 3 years or so but washing up liquid keeps it OK in meantime if you ae happy with the natural silver greyish look.

I ruined some teak on my last boat with teak oil - would never use it again. Turns it black eventaually
