Thinking about going to St Peter Port in Guernsey for the August Bank Holiday weekend (assuming good weather). The HM told me it gets very busy in the school holidays.

Has anybody been there at this time? Will I be wasting my time because it will be full up?

depends on the weather, but school holidays are always busy. your be playing musical boats in the inner basin unless you can get a finger. rafting is the norm outside on the pontoons. I've always found a space in St P. but be prepared to raft or move to let others out.

never had a problem getting in....

but you will need to be flexible.

tricks include

arriving just after the cill has closed entry to the inner harbour - and getting on the holding pontoon until next entry (but you will have to be available to enter at any hour!), As already said if you are dead set on staying inside for a couple of days you may, or may not, struggle.

arriving before 1900h when the harbour master will ensure you are fitted in somewhere.

overall I prefer the outer area as it facilitates runs to Herm & Sark during the day but that's not everyone's objective.

just because I have never seen a 'harbour full' sign, in the style of Yarmouth, doesn't mean it's never happened - however there is a degree of weather correction in that the better the weather the more likely that other boats will aim to overnight on the hook or visitor buoys at Sark (and save money).

ah well yes.....

Bloody hell Duncan! Where have you been hiding? Good to see you back!

back is an operative word in your post! will give you a call and catch up m8

I have used the boat this year (2 x CIs fishing and the usual Weymouth/Lulworth/Swanage) but the last 2 summers we chartered a rag and stick in the med......and used Phaeton very little.

Will call

Duncan and Aidy,

Thanks for your good advice.

This would be our first long distance sleep onboard trip and I think the girls are going to demand shore power. Can you get shore power if you are not on the inside?

I don't think so.

An alternative would be Beaucette - they don't take bookings but if you talk to them a few days in advance, so they know you're coming - they'll find you a spot. Simple bus ride into town (or a cycle ride). Its our favourite in Guernsey.

I did a full panorama whilst there a month ago - but it is very large. See here. On the left hand side of the picture just around from the entrance - that long pontoon is for visitors (though we were slotted into a normal berth further into the marina).

Rick,

What a great photograph! They certainly seemed to have plenty of room then. The only thing with Beaucette is that I have heard it is a bit remote, very peaceful but nothing within walking distance.

That suits me fine but I suspect my girls will want the fleshpots of St PP on hand!

No electricity in the outer harbour just water on the pontoons
