Now that is something I did think about, and I am still concerned about. I was going to have a gantry built for some of the gear e.g. lifeboat and generator, but enquiries at Glastron revealed they would NOT guarantee the stability of the vessel with that amount of weight on the boat. I have decided not to get the liferaft as there is very little room left in the cuddy, I bought a very good quality inflatable childs boat, but that is another story. I have also bought loads of extra cleats to put up and down each side as mine only came with four, I think it is easier the more rope you have and places to lasoo it onto. Oh, and at the LBS I bought a long extendable pole that is meant to tie the boat up for you, you just jab the cleat on the marina and hey presto all done, I think /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Oh yes they do, going to the marina tomorrow to sort that out, the leaflet came as part of their welcome pack, seems good value for money, cheaper than a spare engine, but have not heard anything either way about it.

They're a great service, have only heard good things about them (I'm a member but never used them). Obviously expanded their sphere of operations somewhat. They used to provide limited service around many harbours on south coast, but the full out at sea get you home facility was largely limited to Solent and nearby. Shall have to look at their website again.

Brendan, you worried me there and I checked the seastart web site, I might have to eat my words as it is not clear where they cover, very bad map. I will have to check IF IT IS seastart or some other rescue service. Thanks for bring that to my attention.

Brendan, I made enquiries with seastart and you are RIGHT they do not cover Chatham even though they have a black 'blob' on the website map East and North of there. I contacted MDL at Chatham and it is infact 'Marine Support Services' (MSS) that they use, they cover the whole country and also do route planning, weather e.t.c. membership for info only is £15, Inshore recovery £65, and coastal (up to 3 miles out) anywhere in the UK is £130, they are adding France at this moment so seems a good deal. They also do the updating with the coastguard when you have a problem. Have you or anyone else any experience of MSS?

Grumpy seriously wondering if I should bring the wife along to watch your first trip as she is an RGN Nurse.
I think you're being VERY paranoid!
PS There are a couple of lighters of around 80ft on the Medway, I'll bring one down so you can tow all the extra gear you are buying....
PPS a subscription to the Air Sea rescue services, also Gillingham have had lifeboats in for work so one of those maybe available t stand by on the launch day....

All IMHO and /forums/images/icons/smile.gif of course....

I think you will find I have a 10mtr mooring (C20) for my 6.1mtr boat, need that extra bit of space for the sea trailer /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif No actually I got it to give me more parking space, but now I have done the course, I think I could have got away with 9.5mtrs /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re the nurse, I bought a 12 person medical box, I have added one of those ressucitation protective masks, and some other bits, I have researched various oxygen packages and found BOC to give best value with a complete kit. It is on a rental basis but very reasonable, my son is a fully qualified O2 provider, and I am going to do the PADI course as well.

I am a bit concerned that after fitting extra cleats, my fire extinguishers, first aid box, fire blanket, GPS, EPIRB, VHF, shore power, compass, throw line, e.t.c. that the boat may leak /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Is this guy real or what, I am berthed in Chatham as you know, I will certainly keep an eye open for him on berth C20, then I can keep a wide berth, better still may move to Gillingham with you, could be a safer bet.

Its got to be a wind-up. but then again it takes all sorts, All IMHO

I have actually bought the galley pack on the boat, it has cooker, fridge (well looks like one but is a coolbox I think) sink with water supply and plug hole, and porta pottie. And the rest of it IS NOT junk, it is all safety equipment that may be required for any eventuality. Oh I have bought a portable 12v 6000lb pulling power winch as well (if you need a tow)

The only risk I've always thought of at Gillingham is the huge gas tanks behind the moorings. About 100ish ft long, 20ft diameter and labelled "Natural Gas Normal working pressure 80 Bar" And theirs something like 6-8 of them, 80 Bar that's something like 1200PSI... umm a big bang.

Assume you mean Akzo Nobel that's next door, well the other side of the marina, see a bit of steam but generally nothing whiffy, 'tis all drowned out by the smell of the natural gas, and it's about 50yards away!

do you think Grumpy'll have room for the hazmat suits and respirators on the boat?

So thats how u spell it ! I tried loads of times but couldnt get it 2 look right.
I heard a call on the VHF, years ago, about a huge cloud of gas which was moving across the river. People on boats were passing out and allsorts and the coastguard was advising everyone 2 stay well clear. Luckily I was safely tucked up in Halstow Creek.
When I kept a boat in Gillingham the only thing I could smell was the petrol from the cans that I kept smuggling in.
The smell off of Motney Hill was none 2 pleasant either, although skiing round the turds was always good fun.

You've missed a couple of things, the wooden bungs for stopping the water when you hole the hull and the exposure blankets for the hypothermia cases. What about the emergency drive belts for the engine and the engine spares that should be carried on board. Then of course the drouge anchor that will be needed in that part of the world, what with the currents and all. Oh and the radar reflecter 'cos those fogs roll in quick in that area and the shipping will need to "see" you from afar. Then of course you'll need the emergency water maker for when your stuck on a mud bank for 12 hours or so over a spring tide, I mean, what will the dog have to drink in all that time.Just one other thing, the C.A.R.D for detecting the "ping" off of the other ships radar so you know its coming down on you and he cant see you 'cos your below his horizon. Better get those mail order books out again!
