I think I should apply for honorary membership. I tend to sit in front of the box alternately roaring with laughter or shouting at the idiot box "He's bloody right, you know!".

But what's really got my goat recently is the number of unsolicited telephone calls that disturb my evenings and weekends, coming from people trying to flog me stuff.

Even Practical Boat Owner has started this now. I've had three 'phone calls from different people over the last week trying to get me to take out a subscription. If they've got a special offer, send it to me in the post or put an advert out - don't invade my already severley circumscribed free time.

I try not to be rude to the poor buggers on the other end of the 'phone, who are always polite, but have obviously been instructed to read from a set script. My ire is reserved for whichever layer of management sanctioned the use of this tactic in the first place.

I get so pissed off at this arrogant, money-grubbing intrusion into my time that I generally make a point of not buying anything from people who have the damned impudence & effrontery to do it. I've already cancelled two credit cards with companies who seem to think that by using their product (and increasing their already inflated profits) I become fair game for every little wheeze they dream up to try to screw more money out of people.

So, Practical Boat Owner, from buying perhaps 10 issues out of 12, I'm now not buying any. Stick that in your marketing manual. I'll stick to Yachting Monthly. I know it's the same stable, and possibly doing the same thing, but they haven't started on me yet.

If enough people do this, and let them know they're doing it, it might make them think twice. - Nah! - stupid idea, but I'll do it anyway out of sheer bloodymindedness.

Anyone else want to join the campaign? Perhaps we could invade parliament and throw answer machines at TB.

(I feel better now).

Yes, it works. I signed up some time ago (It takes a few weeks to kick into action), and they have mostly disappeared.

Taking your name off the public - for sale section of the electoral roll also helps.

TPS works.

The few calls that get through now receive my standard treatment. "Can you just hold the line for a moment?" Put phone down. Go and make a cup of tea. They soon get the idea.

TPS is definitely the way to go. We registered and within a month to six weeks calls stopped. We rarely get more than one a month now if that. When we do get calls I tell them I am registered with TPS and ask what they are doing calling me - they usually get flustered and worried at this point and put me through to a supervisor from whom I then take company details for reporting to TPS (although I've never got round to actually reporting anybody yet...)

It is not just the unwanted phone calls. My answerphone has several of those each evening when I get in. I like the letters offering me credit cards, loans and so on. They come with a form and an envelope. I just can't resist sending the form back in its little envelope as requested. I don't write on it of course. Just send it back so they get the postage charge. There is some satisfaction in doing this. And it seems to stop the letters coming. Wonder why?

I registered after the subject was raised on the forum about 10 or 12 weeks ago. As stated it took about 4 weeks to become totally effective but since then the only call I've had was to try to sell me a telephone service!

I had a recent 'cold call', I realised that the best repsonse was to either place a screaming child next to the phone or give such incredible answers that they all hung up on me, been very quiet recently, even the mother in law has gone awol!

I am fed up with all the mail shots I get so now I put the papers including the old envelope from one company in the pre paid envelope of another and so on, it keeps my rubbish down and keeps the post office busy as well
Where do we enroll for the club
