Advice and guidance urgently needed by forum member of long standing that is becoming increasingly grumpy and depressed by recent trends.

I specifically refer to the significant, one might almost say dramatic, increase in new threads with the ubiquitous NB at the end of the topic as if this somehow makes everything ok !....and have you noticed how many of them are a long list of enumerated one liners obviously nicked from elsewhere on the web and even if the initial post is amusing/witty/inoffensive how quickly subsequent posts bring it down to bilge level?

Add into this a most unhealthy level of self identification with the 'Addicts..are you? ' thread and you may be beginning to see where I'm coming from.

As if that isn't enough, I have just found out that the crane in my marina is not man enough to lift my boat out for the two months free winter storage I am entitled to which means finding elsewhere and paying extra. (Entirely my fault of course, never occurred to me thatt might be a problem when I bought the boat so that adds to the feeling that I'm losing my marbles. That'll teach me to be so pleased with myself solving the radar arch problem so that I can at least get in and out more easily !)

Now yet further evidence that the country doesnt really belong to us at all with Mike Martin having to abandon his most useful up front customer focussed contributions to the collective knowledge bank. With decision making like that holding sway dont hold out any hope for sensible decisions about red diesel guys !

And if I'm brutally honest I do miss Byron........../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

So, the season is over. winter draws on and The Priory is a tad expensive for private bookings. We seem to have done away with places where rank and file 'oomans like me could book in on a voluntary basis in favour of something called 'care in the community'...........

So.....advice please........

Not sure I entirely agree with this.

I have 48 thread subjects visible when I view the mobo chat index. At present, 2 are marked NB and a further 4 are, arguably, not boaty subjects including, it must be said, a couple of cut 'n paste jobs from www.vaguelyfunnyoneliners.com or their ilk, and one, ahem, thinly disguised advert (allegedly) for an educational establishment offering tidal training in warmer climes. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

The rest are a gloriously diverse range of discussions about subjects that are, at least tenuously, boaty. Some of them have been around before, but there's usually some further enlightenment that can be gleaned, particularly if someone has learned from further experience in the meantime. I am as guilty as anyone of making flippant (though, I hope, not offensive) remarks on threads but that's part of the fun to me. My feeling is that, even when the threads are entirely non boaty, they are informed by an all pervasive boatiness, that makes me feel I am posting amongst like minded souls - though I appear to be at loggerheads with popular opinion on some subjects, particularly when politics rears its ugly head. Mostly, in those cases, I avoid getting involved.

Above all, it's still a delight, after a couple of years, to know that I can take a break from work and get involved in a discussion about one of my main passions in life. I also think that these bulletin boards are one of the most valuable resources, free or paid for, available online to leisure boaters. Most of that value exists in the contributors, of course, but IPC should be congratulated for setting it up and for continuing to resource it. There's also some guy who provides free webspace for us to post photos on, who should get a vote of thanks. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

As to the rest, I think you're suffering from Autumnitis; I get it myself. No known cure, I am afraid, except to wait about 6 months for spring to come /forums/images/icons/frown.gif. In the meantime, the only care in the community available to Grumpy Old Boaters (GOBs) is on here, I'm afraid!

PS (a) Agree totally about the Mike Martin business. A major PR own goal for OfCom. (b) I miss Byron too. Can't somebody tell him that there are, so to speak, fewer emoticons posted than there used to be? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Not sure if I'm allowed to reply to this as you specifically ask for forumites of long standing and I still regard myself as a newbie (only 60 odd posts- barely out of nappies).

There are many reasons I keep coming back to the forum, not least of which is the odd non-boaty rant which almost always sparks an interesting bout of banter some of which is even relevant to the original post. The odd Friday funny can be a welcome interlude in an otherwise tedious day. Mainly though it is the fact that the forum is an encyclopaedic resource of help, advice and expertise where anyone can ask and receive in a true sense of community as long as they follow a few basic rules like filling in their profile.

The point is that the forum is like a society with everything that brings, disagreement, harmony, humour, banter, insults (usually friendly) conflict - you get the drift. I think the forum would suffer if it was all too boat related although that is always the thread that holds it all together. The only thing I would ban is politics and political statements of opinion, I don't need that.

And what does it mean when someone puts NM at the end of a thread title.

PS Is/was Byron happy1? Never experienced his input as I am too new - wouldn't mind hearing the story though.

The Happy1 Saga

Difficult to convey in a few words. Let's just say that he was a comparatively inexperienced boater, with huge enthusiasm for his new hobby, who had a rather unfortunate way of expressing himself that seemed to put a lot of people's backs up - not just on this forum but elsewhere as well. He was also a tremendous enthusiast for bits of equipment, not all of them totally necessary (arguably: toaster, anyone?...) on a small sports boat, and he never seemed to tire of recounting minute details of the latest bargain he had unearthed. He was also a prolific poster, which some found wearisome.

Generally, I found his posts a bit tedious, but a few of them were very funny indeed, albeit unintentionally. In the end, Kim got exasperated by him, and by the kind of reaction that his postings drew, and sin-binned him - not entirely his fault. It's a bit difficult to describe what people found so annoying about him unless you read some of his threads (and believe me, you haven't got the time).

By all accounts, he is a nice guy and I believe has now moved on to a bigger boat.

Byron has no connection with Happy1 except that he was one of the people who found H1 exceedingly tedious, and allegedly stopped posting here in consequence. That was quite a loss for the Forum because he is hugely knowledgeable about motor boating and a particular mine of information on some of the older models and where they came from. He's also a very funny guy.

Do you remember on your old boat, when you got the motorised engine hatch thingie? I reminded you of that toy where the hatch raised up and a hand (Thing!) came out and pinched a coin? WELL! I'm now thinking about another toy where this ram would swing down from your hull and raise you and plonk you onto the hardstanding. Sort of like one of these Teddies or that walking Willy!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

The government needs you to join their 'think the unthinkable' think tank.
Byrons lovechild indeed........I was feeling depressed but there's no need to turn me suicidal..........with an imagination like yours I shudder to think who my mother might be? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: The Happy1 Saga

Gawd you really are a miserable old tart aren't you Tone?

Moan moan moan that's all you do. I don't post here much these days but like to "lurk" and read some of the great and good posts, but all I ever see from you B1 is yet another moan. Moan that Byron's left you like a love sick puppy, moan that your boat's too big for your marinas crane; moan that people post subjects that you don't like; moan that there's too many non-boaty posts, etc etc.

Cor I reckon you need to get that boat of yours out the water now and not wait for Spring, and get the welder in to have a look at it. Then you can have a real good moan about the cost of repairs, how steel isn't like it was in your day; how the welder used two rods when one would have done and what about the waste and the extra cost.

Cor there's loads yet for you to complain about.

Oh any chance of another day out your boat before you have it lifted out to be fixed then?
