Tomorrow I'm having a GRP masterclass from Tony Saltenstall, brother of ex Olympic coach Jim Saltonstall. Other than being a sh*t hot sailor hes an absolute whiz with GRP and I'm having a day with him learning before setting off south an a circumnavigation in a few weeks.

But what shall we cover / make? I'd like to now how to fix a hole effectively but what else? Can you think of anything I could custom make that could be useful or nice to have?

How about a pod to take instruments - - the kind of thing mounted on the compass binnacle.

It will cover a lot of different techniques, including making a plug.

I have done some GRP training. I still have a piece of carbon fibre about 35 by15cms with a section of foam stuck on and further carbon over the foam making a very stiff plank. No not any use but gives practice at lay up and foam shaping to give gentle curve to carbon/glass over the top. Can also be useful in learning vacuum bagging. I also saw a lot of similar in glass 35 by 8cms by 1.5cms. Good luck with the class and especially good luck thinking of something to make that is useful. As you say repairs are more common on a boat but you never know you want something until you need it. olewill

I hope for your sake that Tony does not follow Jim's lead when you do something wrong.
When I was in the youth team I remember Jim sending me and others off to run right round Queen Mary reservoir on a number of occasions because we didn't hike hard enough, was late for the start or missed a shift.
Happy days !

Make light weight foam core wash boards, no more varnishing.........
