Many thanks for the response regarding my cutless bearing. My boat is a 23ft motorsailer.Ihave disconnected the shaft from the engineand the oil sealed gland but am having trouble removing the shaft from the boat.It pulls back a couple of inches and then sticks.I feel that their is growth/corrosion in the area behind the cutless bearingand have sprayed a water reppellant/lubricant up the shaft past the slightly worn cutless and fro m inside the hull.
Has anyone else experienced this? any suggestions as how to dissolve the growth would be much appreciated.
All the best and many thanks.

It may indeed be a lime/calcium build up on the shaft, and I know I get this on mine, if it is,then try lime scale remover.

Its available from hardware counters etc. and is intended for cleaning lime scale of taps etc. Ive used it in my Baby Blake heads which develop a build up around the 'water line' and it fizzes off the lime in no time at all.

Not knowing the exact type of shaft configeration you have,.....

I would suggest, although might not be applicable or possible

1 unscrew the cutless housing and remove at the same time as the shaft, thus not having to pull the growth through.

2 have you loosened / removed the stern gland packing, as this might be tight on an unworn part of the shaft as it is drawn through?

be prepared to renew the shaft, cutlass, & remetal / renew the bearing behind the packing if applicable

good luck

No way the shaft would pass through the oil-seal inwards. Either extract the shaft from the outside or remove the oil-seal first if the shaft needs to be removed to the inside. Those seals are extremely delicate. Even if you use oil during fitting them they may seize. Only water as lubricant is allowed. So any scaling or growth on the shaft would destroy the seal if you try to pull it through anyway. Do not mess around with any chemicals here either........
