I am having a steel gas box made as it is much cheaper than the advertised GRP one, but am having difficulty in finding anywhere that sells suitable grommets for the 8mm copper pipe as it passes through the box and the bulkheads. I know that I can buy bulkhead connectors but I am reluctant to cut the pipe as that would introduce a further risk of leakage.
All I can find is electric cable grommets that don't seem suitable for the job. Can anyone suggest a suitable supplier?

I understand you should use a bulkhead connector for the side of the box - as you will have flexible hose inside and copper outside. From the box to the appliance you can use grommets where they pass through bulkheads etc. Also a tap fitting where you take off for the flexible hose to the appliance.
Sorry can't suggest a suitable supplier for grommets except electrical places - but how about plastic electrical glands? - they might be suitable OR a large hole through the bulkhead and the copper pipe clipped either side - the idea being that the pipe can't chafe in the hole.

rubber hose threaded over the pipe and stuck in place with sikaflex works fine. (whether a surveyor or corgi man would pass it is another matter).

When I fitted out my boat and had to pass through a bulkhead I had the same concern as you in that more joints = more potential leaks!! Solution I came up with was to use proper through bulkhead fittings but to drill right through the fitting so that the pipe can pass through in one peice and then to tighten upthe nuts with the olives in place. Result, no joints and pipework supported and held firm at each and every bulkhead. Scorch.

Having spoken to the guy who is going to do my gas survey (yes I finally found one, from Bangor no less ) this is what he suggested rather than break the pipe, i.e. drill through a bulkhead fitting. He is also happy with grommets or anything that will prevent schaffing.

But I still have to do some work on items over looked, the 20mm minimum internal diameter hose to drain the locker must be fuel grade, daft, but it is a rule.

He told me that when he comes to survey the gas installation, one cooker! He also has to check for adequate ventilation in the cooking space, in my circumstance the saloon which can also convert to a queen size bunk, so classed as two person sleeping. Luckily my aft cabins are not connected to the saloon otherwise it would be six people, this is for CO levels.

For two people with respect to my 2 burner stove, grill and oven I must have approx 18sq inches top ventilation and 18 sq inches bottom. A 4 inch mushroom vent gives 12 sq inches and a 5 inch UFO type is only 4sq inches, if mesh fitted this will drop to 2sq inches - beware.

The low level vent must be at the sole or bildge, ductiing to cockpit is allowed and a lift from the sole of about 3ft is acceptable as my galley sole is down in the hull.

Ho hum, more work to do, annoyingly we never cook with the hatch closed, but this is not acceptable and vents must be fitted.

Hi,

I have a spirit stove as the gas installation needed lot's of work to bring it up to scratch. These don't seem to be inspected or have any special insurance restrictions but they must give of CO as well.

Thanks. Sounds a good idea. (That's what I like about this BB.) What drill bit did you use to cut through the bulkhead connector?
