I'm trying to think of some gift ideas for my Old man. We are joint owners of our yacht, a 26ft cruiser/racer.

He is 49 years old and i have not a single iota of an idea as to what to get him. So I'm calling on fellow forumites who are around the same age to give me tips on what to get.

I've got a £20-£30 budget.

He's keen on learning more on sail trimming as i've convinced him to get the boat into some club racing next year. I don't want a book that will be chucked in the locker and forgotten about though.

any other ideas?

Sail Performance by CA Marchaj, Adlard Coles. Very very readable for the historical development story, as well as for the tech details.

A decent laser torch (for identifying stars), and frightening crows up to 5 miles away.

A few ideas

If his sails haven't got them yet - a set of tell-tails. These you can make from spinnaker tape and wool for the jib and ribbon for the main.
Spinnaker tape and a sail repair kit with palm.
The Racing Rules 2009 edition with next January's changes.
A protest flag to attach to the backstay with a method of furling.
A countdown timer.
A handbearing compass.

... and finally some silver polish for all the cups he'll win.

Crocs

A pair of CROCS .. Not imitation ones .. Real ones £20 - £30 depending on size and colour .. I have two pairs of PINK.. and a pair of LIGHT BLUE .. Great on the pontoon and on and off the boat .. Once he's got over the shock  he will wonder how he ever managed without them .. Even wear mine down to TESCO's .. :p

Jib Trimming and Mainsail Trimming - two books by Felix Marks. Or Sails for Racing by John Heyes. This are all slimmish with lots of photos, so not heavy going at all. My favourite reference book ever is The Offshore Race Crews Manual by Stuart Quarrie. Tells you everything in an easy to read format.

your blatant commercial plug & web page wont work here

If I'm correct PawPaw is a longstanding forumite who has presumably had to re-register because the new software has prevented him from logging in under his old name. He's contributed a lot on here and his website is a valuable - and free - resource to anybody looking at serious passage making.

I think he's earned the right to give a cheeky plug for his DVD, no? :)

To be a typical RN type (he says with Tongue in cheek), I'll be diplomatic and resolve this by saying you are both right. I'm after a sail trimming book that can be read and be easy to understand. I don't want dad to give up on it because he doesn't understand it and the book being referenced like a lot of his do. :)

I'll research the suggestions given with respect to the books, thank you.

I like the idea of dogwatch's gerber, I don't think he has a proper knife for sailing, just the usual leatherman which is obviously no good for emergencies.

Other suggestions are still welcome though
