Griff Anchor attachment.

Have to admit I hadn't heard of Griff, or that they made anchors, but that's what I have on Sheolin; a fabricated CQR lookalike weighing in at @ 35lbs.
The problem is, I have to lift it over the bow roller with one hand while bracing myself with the other against the pulpit. The 16mm shackle on the anchor, with it's lug, just won't go over the bow roller, and either my back, my shoulder, the Lofrans Cayman windlass or the bow roller assembly will break one day. That shackle and the 12mm bow shackle are also rusty and of unknown provenance. I'd like to change them both.
I've measured the chain and it looks to me to be Lofrans G40.

I'm thinking of using a 16mm Petersen Stainless Steel Shackle and 12.7mm Peterson Bow shackle, (courtesy of Jimmy Green), using Loctite 242 as recommended by @vyv_cox to secure the pins.
With a breaking load of 10t and 8t respectively they are comfortably in excess of the MBL of the chain, circa 6.8t.
Does all that sound reasonable or am I missing something?

I haven't anchored enough yet with Sheolin to have a feel for whether the anchor comes up arsy-versy enough to warrant a swivel or boomerang, so I'm leaving them out for now.

I don't know why you think its Lofrans chain - G40 could be from any supplier and unless it marked on the links with a 4 or 40 it is more likely to be a G30 chain. The links if it is recent should be marked with the chain quality, either 3, 4 or 7. You may need to look very carefully to find any link marks which might be stamped every few, or many, links. If its a European chain G30, 40 and 70 will all have the same link size - just measure the wire from which the chain is made.

Jimmy Green stock and supply shackles without protruding lugs, I think they use an Allan key. They are gal and specifically supplied for connection anchor to chain. They are made by a French company Chaineries ????. I'd suggest them in preference to a stainless shackle that is going to be mouthwateringly expensive. I'd save that money (for the stainless shackles) and invest it in a better anchor.

If you upgrade the anchor to something from the 21st Century I'd suggest you look at Viking or Anchor Rights aluminium Excel. Both are light (one by virtue of being fabricated from High tensile steel the other as it is aluminium (with a High tensile aluminium shank). The Excel, available from Jimmy Green will be, again, expensive (it comes from Oz). The Viking should be a cheaper option. Your current anchor will have all the virtues of a CQR superimposed on it being a copy. If you go the new anchor route both Jimmy Green and Viking supply Boomerang (or I think Jimmy Green does, Viking certainly offers them) and you might be able to negotiate a discount by sourcing both at the same time as a new anchor. You will certainly save the 'shipping' costs for the Boomerang if you source the anchor from Viking.

I note there is some significant corrosion of the shackles at the interface with the anchor. Simply chop this links off. Corrosion in that location is common place. I'm not sure of the reasons but I suspect it is because there is a corrosion cell set up between the different steel alloys, the chain, the shackle and the anchor + salt water. That corrosion is common place - everyone has the same issue to a greater of lessor extent. Chop of and start again. Ideally you want to join anchor to chain with one shackle - not a multitude (of 2. :). ).

Unfortunately that particular anchor has a hole in the shank rather than a slot, so two shackles back to back are needed.

I would suggest that the two rusty shackles were un-galvanised when fitted as it is unusual to lose all zinc from both. I agree replace with galvanised ones rather than stainless steel: very expensive in the large size.
 
We still use the 35lb Griff that came with the boat. It probably seldom digs in but the weight including chain plus weed if available often holds us. The shackle is long gone and replaced by a slim swivel - a Kong? - and it goes over the roller which we had widened. I never fancy the better new anchors - they won’t fold over and fit in the shallow anchor locker next to the windlass.
 
The two shackles were never galvanised. I’ll probably have to cut them off as the threads may be seized solid.
@Neeves advice is sound, but I won’t be buying a new anchor this year. I have an aluminium Fortress F16 as a kedge / backup. Can’t really use it as a main anchor though without a new stemhead fitting / forestay attachment.
The Peterson shackles are expensive, yes, but they should allow the windlass to bring the Griff anchor home without jamming or jumping off the roller.
 
Had a 35lb Griff on my previous boat. Held us in F9 in Loch Harport when others were dragging all night. Was quite happy with it for 25 years. Seemed quite a good anchor and better than the Delta I had on my next boat.
