GRIB US did not install properly. Tried downloading again but can't, neither will the initial download uninstall. Tried the UGRIB US web site for a solution, several similar queries but no answers found!. Any ideas?

At the risk of stating the obvious, you know you need to log into the website for the download button to appear. Otherwise its prob a problem with your browsers popup blocker.

Ugrib has always had some odd quirks. zyGrib uses, as they all do, the same data ie the GFS. There are many more options on zyGrib and it will take an hour or so to explore. Sometimes there can be problems in loading the program initially. If you find any problems, go to my site and look or search for zyGrib. http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Grib-Files-Getting-And-Using

We are experiencing the same problems. Apparently, according to the FAQ 'they' allow 3 'users' on any one account. It would appear that people that use infrequently and cannot remember their details are gumming up the system. One can remember the e mail, but putting this in elicits a 'this e mail is already in use!! So what do we do, of course, start another account using another e mail. This is overloading the system & of course being 'merican it becomes paranoid.
It's still a great guide and a useful tool for forecasting as long as it's used with local information to form a 'picture'.

Indeed they do allow only three users per ID. This, they say, is to prevent abuse of their system. Unfortunately they use your login ID and your IP address to determine who you are. So cruising sailors who use public wifi hotspots (where you'll get a different IP address at every hotspot) can connect at three different places and then they're blocked. Ugrib know about this issue, it was first raised on their forum over 3 years ago, but they refuse to do anything about it.

Change to zgrib, it doesn't do that to you.

I know that I am repeating what I have said in other discussions BUT I have to remind you that most GRIB services provide data from the same source ie the NOAA GFS. The only differences are in what elements are made available and how they are shown.

They are great for forward planning up to about 7 days ahead. They can only give large scale features and not local detail.

Local detail is better dealt with using a combination of whatever is on the VHF plus your own experience and commonsense.

Ditto, great program. The only problem I have is that my chart plotter software can't read the ZyGrib data files. Has anyone else found this?

Possibly because zyGrib packages its downloads into a .bz2 compressed form. You could try installing 7zip, or some other unzip tool that deals with bz2 packaging, to reveal the .grb file inside. Then try your plotter on the resulting .grb file.

+1 - I had to ditch UGrib about a year ago when it stopped accepting my email id/password. I must have used dozens of IP addresses in the 5 years or so I did use it. I cant believe the IP restriction is anything like as well defined as described.

I now wonder why it took me so long to switch to zyGrib tho :)

My plotter software (SeaPro) can read .bz2 files, but the ones on the ZyGrib site don't display properly. I've contacted ZyGrib about it, but they say their files are OK.

Oh well, just a thought. From memory UGRIB was never happy with GRIB files obtained via Saildocs and wouldnt display them - must be more to this GRIB format than meets the eye

Another vote for ZyGrib.

Still use USGrib, but it tends to a bit hit and miss. They once stopped my using as I using multiple log ins - seems you weren't allowed to use loads of different access points and in multiple countries! Great when moving from the Algarve (via the Guardiana), down the Spanish coast to Morocco and Gib!!
