I shall be spending the first 3 weeks of September cruising around the Greek Islands and can't wait! A friend of mine has chartered a boat and we will be collecting it from Athens and then going......well, where do people suggest and what are the must does?
I have never sailed in the Med only the Caribbean so not sure what to expect?

Folegandros, Milos (Cyclades group) spring to mind as well as busier islands like Naxos/Paros/Andros/Mykonos. Santorini which is a fair hike South is quite stunning and well worth visit but like Mykonos, very fashionable and therefore expensive. Loads of islands have their own web sites, try google'ing them and you'll find heaps of information. Depends really on what you want out of your holiday really. They'll all be much quieter tho in September.

Sifnos, Kithnos and Serifos are comparatively unsullied by tourism, but I'm not sure what, if any, facilities there are for visiting yachts, as it's about 20 years since I was there. Heikell will tell you, presumably.

Avoid Ios like the plague, unless you like listening to Hi NRG disco at 4.00 am in the morning. Paros is nice, though the main town, Parikia, is quite busy - Naoussa, across the island, is much nicer as is the smaller island of AntiParos.

Nearer Athens, the Saronic Gulf is a very mixed bag. Aegina is full of wealthy Athenians, and Hydra is brill - sophisticated and full of expensive shops, if you get the yearning for some retail therapy. Personally, I'd avoid Poros and Spetsai, even though the latter provided the inspiration for John Fowles' "The Magus".

Very envious........

Hi Stella this year I'm chartering a boat from Gouvia again to see what I missed last year! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif SWMBO and myself along with two friends are sailing to Lefkas, end of August to 5th of September.

I like using this site for information if you click on the areas listed at the bottom of the page you can get some good ideas of where to sail!

Hope that helps....Dave

Been there a couple of times in the past year.

Hydra is easily accessible from Athens in a full day - you can stop in Poros if you want somewhere in between but it's not that special. Watch out for smelly Methanos where the harbour smells of rotten eggs!

Hydra is a real gem, though anchoring in the harbour is a handful if you're a novice - try and be there relatively early and plan on leaving relatively late. Otherwise there is a small bay near to Hydra town which is quiet but walkable from.

Little local islands such as Dhokos often have beautiful bays in which to moor for lunch - sparklingly clear water and you'll have them to yourself.

Spetses is a gorgeous island, and don't overlook Monemvassia on the mainland. Catch ferries from Spetses or nearby to go to Epidavros for the stunning ancient Greek theatre if you fancy a day on land.

As for the Cyclades, Paros, Naxos etc are lovely with some gorgeous places. The outer islands are charming and quite off the planet - lots of little harbours where you share space with the local fishermen. Ios is great - a real tonic after too many quiet places. Climb up into the town for the best bars and restaurants: don't believe everything you hear about it being full of drunk students - others get drunk there too!

Have a fab trip and look out for the dolphins!

Agreed, an excellent choice especially if one stops and explores the smaller islands as well as the big ones. Personally wouldn't "do" Ios - pretty enough but totally sold its soul to tourism. Santorini similar but a "must do" due to its awsome beauty.
