Hello,

I'm currently in the process of buying a yacht in Crete, Greece. It's Greek flagged and needs de-registering. I know the seller usually does this as part of the sale. However, I've also heard that if you register the ship on the British SSR (at the same point it's still on the greek register), that the Greek register will just "time-out" as such. And further, a greek local told me if you take the British SSR registration to the port police, they'll de-register it off the Greek Flag too.

Anyone with experience doing this have any ideas if any of the above is true?

Thanks
Ryan

sounds scarily simple and bureaucracy doesn't work like that down here!
please ask a proper office dealing with that sort of thing, I doubt it's that simple and doubt even the port police can do it, but they'll probably direct you to the right person.

cheers

Thanks for that Vas. I assumed the same.

I've got some lawyers on the case now and the owner is having to sort the de-registration of the flag.

the "some lawyers" bit I don't really like...
Hope they know what they are doing and are familiar with the peculiarities of the yacht legislation.
If you want I can pass you the details of the company that did the paperwork when I bought my boat. No connection, just a happy customer

Hi , I know this is an old post but did you ever get a sensible answer about this and how did itpan out in the end. I’m hoping to buy a Greek registered boat and am just looking into the de-register UK SSR admin?

As suggested, it is the seller's responsibility to de register the boat, although I expect you will have to pay. If you are buying through a broker he will organise it. As with many things in Greece there is always a third party, lawyer in this case to pay, but the process is straightforward and you will get a letter confirming the boat has been removed from the register. You will need your completed Bill of Sale stamped by the Port Police - the only cheap bit about 4 euros! before deregistration. From memory it took about 3 weeks to go through the registry and cost was around 800 euros.

If you are eligible (that is established in the UK) you can register on the SSR as soon as you own the boat and before you get the deregistration papers. As the SSR is not a "proper" register of title it does not matter that the boat is still formally on the Greek register until the deregistration process is complete, so you can sail the boat as soon as you have paid for it.

If you could pass the name of that company to me I'd appreciate it. Thanks
