As I understand it , this tax was ruled illegal by the EU some years back, as it was in conflict with free movement throughout Europe . A case was brought against Greece by a British yachtie and a case number/ repeal number has been issued , so it can be quoted when asked for Dekra by the port police in Greece . can anyone throw more light on this controversial subject ?

Dekra

I thinh you are confusing the Dekra with the fabled "cruising tax" rumoured a few years ago. The Dekra is the "pleasure craft traffic document" which you should obtain when you arrive in Greece it cost30 euros 3 /4 years ago and thats it. Get it stamped regularly and it keeps the authorities happy.
The "Greek cruising tax" was a rumour and does not exist.

That is correct. Greek yachts need it as well so there is no restriction on other EU craft that does not apply to Greeks. There is however a cruising permit required by non-EU craft.

You are confusing the under 10 metres exemption!
All boats must then visit the Port Authority (Police). If the boat is over 10m then a Trafic Document (DEKPA) must be purchased from here. Non-EU boats may also be subject to a Reciprocal Tax charge instead of having to purchase a Cruising Permit.
