where in greece? I had to pay 2000drx per meter to sail in greek waters plus
10000drx for a transit log ....you need insurance with the greek endorsment for pollution.also you will need to keep proof of not leaving greek waters (getting your transit log stamped) otherwise they charge again...ok many will say its an illegal tax but the greeks can also be very difficult and principals become expensive
so for a 14 mtr boat you will pay approx £75 this should last 3 yrs...many brits will say dont pay and argue..well its up to you...i paid because i live there and i got fed up with having to sneak about..also a friend had a minor bump with a greek fishing boat..he had to pay all backdated money and for the damage to greek boat
cost him a lot...happy new year...Bill
Hi .Bill`s right I have sail in the Ionion for 4years you had to keep your head down when the, port police, came for the boat papers, some were OK others officious. However when we sailed around the peloponise We stoped in kalamata THe Port police there were very dificult and when i argued that the tax was illegal They threatened to arrest me and the crew and inpound the yacht untill I saw the Judge [Yes the same Kalimata as the plane spotters ]I paided up on the spot . Yes the "system" is a bit arbitrary and may soon be found to be illegal by the European courts. However it is best to play this "rule" by ear. It was originally introduced to cause pain to the Turks over the Cyprus situation. Problem is that the local authorities in individual parts of Greece operate in different and entirely unpredictable ways. Stick to the rule as written but never avoid suggesting (albiet subtly) that there seems to be a difference but do it with a smiling face!. I have found Port Police - who are generally feared by the locals to range from either officious neo facists to very helpful friendly boating enthusiastswho can't do enough to help. The officers in Poros gave us the best berth in the harbour in November where we rode out f9-10 and torrential rain in great comfort and we didn't pay a single drachma over four days.

Rod Heikel in the latest edition 8 of his "Greek Waters Pilot" states the situation accurately and his advice of lobbying your MEP is sound. (Not intended as a plug for Rod's books but you can't do much better IMHO)
Hi Steve Did you stay in the channel or on the north wall in poros? also did you meet john and sarah on "catanna" an olimpicsea 42(copy of sun legend 41)?
Yes we were alongside John & Sarah (both ex-police officers?) with their friend Simon for two nights on the way south, when the weather was superb. They were waiting for the yard across the strait to lift them out for the winter. We were both alongside a 52ft something that had been arrested for people smuggling and was awaiting going for auction in early December.
thanks guys it look as if the best way is to pay the tax when I go back out there .
my boat is in Corfu at time but hopefully I be back out there in April right thourgh the summer crusing the Islands so any more info you came give me will be wecome ie (where and where not to go so on )
Hi we spent years sailing the Ionion. Not many bad places WE found the best place were the ones not liked in the Heikell pilot Lot more space as the flotillas did not go to them .Saying that if you needed help or company Sailing Holiday lead crews were allway VERY helpfull And Sun Sails lead crews were not to bad either . but most of the time you had to careful of SunSails clients they did not seem to have any sailing skills, and can very easy get themselfs and anyone near, into trouble If you want any more imformation please ask . Did`nt spend a lot of time in Corfu though Cheers Bob T ps Zakinthos is very good no flotillas go that far south or if they do only for one day. When reading the above it looks as if I hate flots but I went with S/H 6years ago and loved it. They are the best of the lot .Bob
