There seems to be a consensus among solo sailors that if they go overboard on a boat doing 20 - 30 knots neither a life-jacket nor a harness will save them - and they only hamper their movements on deck.
That used to the case, but no longer. Some solo sailors always wear a harness, and they have saved the life of several people, eg Nick Moloney who broke his arm trying to get back on board on the Mini Transat, but is still here, thank God.

I think you make a very valid point about Nick (and yes what a poorer place it would be without him) what is interesting is he was on a mini when he broke his arm, not sure the outcome would be the same on the current generation of open 60's. Be interested in your thoughts?
