Why did they not just put the light on top of the cliff?

They did originally - that's the famous Belle Tout Lighthouse, which is the one they moved back from the cliff edge a few years ago.

Wasn't very visible in sea mists or close to the shore, so they built the current Beachy Head Lighthouse.

On the subject of revamping lighthouses, does anybody know how they put the crane (it's huge) on to the top of the Nab Tower?

...with difficulty.

Mind you, whilst they were at it you'd think they coulda built it straight :D

In a similar vein, I was chatting to the coastal plod recently, asking how they removed the Renault Espaces etc from the bottom of Culver Cliffs, ....after, ....well you know. Well, they tell me that they only remove the contents from the Espaces and the sea deals with the rest. And within a day or two....no trace.

Now back to the crane on the Nab. How did they get something as massive as that on to the top?
