My 3.5 year old Simrad CX44 Navstation packed up last weekend whilst I was using it, leaving me with only a few days to get it sorted if we were to have radar on our holiday. Explored various replacement options, but as the CX44 is discontinued and the replacement NX-45 doesn't support the open scanner I have - figured I'd give Simrad a call.

Within 20seconds, I got a very knowledgeable guy and when I explained I was happy to wield a soldering iron, meter and oscilloscope, he suggested a few components which could give rise to the symptoms I was seeing.

Well, he was right on the money with his first suggestion. One of the schottky diodes in the switch-mode power-supply had failed (gone short). 31p later, my plotter/radar is working again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Great service by Simrad - its very unusual to get put through to someone in the UK who can give component level info these days!

Well done Rick and Simrad. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But surely most of us on the forum could have told you to look at the schitting diode first with some of Hurricane's special 'lube' second! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Still, bet your relieved, have a good holiday. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
