Great Lakes

A question for any American subscribers...

Is it possible to sail between all the Great Lakes, or are you just limited to one? And is it possible to sail between any/all of the lakes and the sea?

Do many people sail on them? All the American magazines seem to concentrate on Cape Hatteras and Cheasapeake Bay. Or is that just like our press acting like there's barely anywhere outside of the Solent worth bothering about?

I've no intention of sailing there, I've just come back from Atlanta and had a good view of them as I flew over. Just wondering.

Hudson River

Ditto the above - glimpsed the Hudson running inland from the NW end of Manhattan - looked terrific with the fall colours just beginning, but very few 'personal' boats to be seen. Is there an active cruising scene? Is bareboat charter a possibility (Googling it comes up with not very much)?

I used to live in Toronto (moved to California). As I recall the situation is this; the Atlantic can be reached via the St Laurence from Lake Ontario, there is also a canal that will link you up to the Hudson River thence to New York. To get from Lake Eyre to Lake Ontario you have to take the Welland Canal through Ontario Canada in order to circumvent Niagra Falls. The rest of the lakes are easy they just link up.

Yes, was given it for Christmas when I was a small kid, and was captivated by the story and the wonderful illustrations.
